You can see it in a full spread in Urban Ink magazine

When Nick Cannon married Mariah Carey in 2008, they exchanged vows but also got each other’s name tattooed on their body, as a promise that this was for life: she got a little butterfly on her lower back with “Mrs. Cannon” inside, while he got “Mariah” across his shoulder blades in large letters.

The marriage ended last year, and Nick soon started getting more ink to cover “Mariah” up. Paparazzi shots revealed that he was going for a religious theme with a Jesus on a cross piece, but the latest issue of Urban Ink magazine offers the best and first proper look at the finished work.

New back tattoo took 30 hours to complete

You can pick up the magazine for the full spread with Nick’s body art, including the new piece that covers his entire back. Added to the Jesus on the cross are two cherubs that represent his children with Mariah, twins Monroe and Moroccan, and the words “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

The mag reveals that Nick’s new piece took a total of 30 hours to complete and is meant to signify a new stage in his life, combining his children and his spirituality.

The name “Mariah” can still be seen under the new piece, but only if you know where to look for it. The second photo in the gallery attached to this article will help you with that.

As you can see in the Urban Ink photo, this isn’t the only tattoo that Nick got as of late: he’s also sporting a new sleeve, but is yet to get anything done on his chest.

Not a cover-up of an old tattoo, more like adding to it

Nick Cannon also spoke to People Magazine about his latest piece of ink, as the video below will confirm, and he made it a point of stressing that he wasn’t trying to cover it up, but rather to add to it.

You have to admit, Nick is handling his split from Mariah in the most diplomatic, gentlemanly fashion, especially considering the rumors about the alleged real reason for the split and how she’d made his life a living hell.

He doesn’t say that he wanted to rid himself of the “Mariah” tat because he’d divorced her, he says he wanted something new for the new stage in his life, so the idea for this piece came to be. He even adds that, if he wanted, he could have had his ex-wife’s name lasered off, but this wasn’t about a cover-up, this was about adding something to something that already was there.

This probably explains why we can still see “Mariah” underneath the clouds from the Jesus piece.
