Rumor has it that Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey are on the verge of divorce, having already settled most custodial and financial issues between themselves and their attorneys, and waiting for the last details of the agreement to be ironed out until they make the announcement.

Proof that their marriage is beyond saving seems to come with a new batch of paparazzi photos showing that, indeed, Nick has had his huge Mariah tattoo covered up with new ink.

You can see a glimpse of his new tattoo in the second photo in the gallery below. The first shot is of the Mariah ink, as he debuted it shortly after they tied the knot in 2008.

Love might not last forever, but tattoos usually do

According to insider reports, Nick and Mariah have not been sharing the same house or bed since May this year, when things between them got so bad that he decided to move out until they could reach an agreement before filing for divorce.

They have 2 children together, and they resolved to do this in the most amicable manner possible for the sake of the twins, which would explain the lack of an actual confirmation of the impending divorce. But Nick did tell the media that they were having issues and that they were living in separate houses.

In other words, the grounds for the divorce rumor were there, even assuming the possibility exists they might not break up.

With these new paparazzi photos, the divorce talk has received an unprecedented boost, as they’re considered “confirmation” that Nick and Mariah are days from making it official. Why else would he replace the huge Mariah tattoo he got for her with a picture of Jesus on a cross?

It certainly seems like Nick was having regrets about getting the diva’s name inked on his back, and that he considered the laser removal procedure too painful and complicated for removing her from his life. So he had the piece covered up instead, with angel wings covering Mariah’s name.

What went wrong?

For years, Nick and Mariah defied even the most optimistic bets on their marriage, putting a very happy couple front, apparently in possession of the secret to maintaining a lengthy relationship in showbiz.

Saying news of their separation was a shock is the understatement of the year – and the same goes for the reports that followed soon, painting a very dire picture of what their life as a couple was like for the last couple of years.

Apparently, Mariah is a diva who has long lost all contact with reality and Nick grew tired of trying to reason with her. To boot, she’s insanely jealous and insecure, which means he had to “check in” with her every few minutes when he was away on business, because she wanted to make sure he wouldn’t cheat.

Not that Nick is without sin, the same insiders whisper. He is believed to have cheated on Mariah at least a few times, which set her jealousy fits off.

In the end, it was Nick who asked for the divorce because he believed the relationship had become too toxic for the kids and for both of them as well. Apparently, his first move once he regained his “freedom” was to alter his back tattoo with his estranged wife’s name.
