They will be spending Christmas together, as a family

Rumors that Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey’s 6-year marriage was over originated from Cannon himself, who hinted in an interview earlier this year that he had been living in a different house than his wife for some months.

Officially though, the split was never confirmed, even if it was in all the glossies and tabloids, along with occasionally fictitious details from behind the scenes, into the Carey-Cannon household.

Nick confirmed the split at long last in an interview with Good Morning America, when speaking to Lara Spencer about his and Mariah’s Christmas plans.

“Always focus on family”

Cannon wrote a Christmas children’s book that is now out in stores, based on his and Mariah’s twins, Morocco and Monroe, called “Roco & Roe’s 12 Days of Christmas.” It’s based on the twins’ life and their experience of the winter holidays, and comes with illustrations that leave no doubt as to that.

Nick says that the twins, who are 3 and a half years old, even contributed to the book, in the sense that they inspired him to write it and also helped out with the illustrations, pointing out to him whatever they perceived as inaccuracies.

This sounds like the perfect Christmas family story, but the reality is that it all takes a lot of hard work on his part – and Mariah’s. “You and I were just talking, Mariah and you are separated, Christmas is about family first and foremost,” Spencer tells Nick.

“Always focus on family,” he says, as you can see in the video below. “We'll forever be family. At the same time, we're there for our children, making them the No. 1 priority and understanding they're loved and can have an amazing holiday.”

This is the first time that Nick goes on the record saying that he and Mariah are officially separated.

Divorce has been months in the making

Word online has it that Nick and Mariah effectively separated in May this year, after months of intense fighting and trying to find a solution to make the relationship work. They didn’t find it so, in spring, Nick decided to move out of the house.

As far as the media knows, neither has filed the divorce papers yet because they’ve been talking since the split, trying to come up with a favorable agreement regarding custody and money. Admittedly, they want to settle everything before they file the papers, because that would make the divorce go smoothly.

Last week, Mariah was 3 hours late to the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree lighting ceremony, which was taped for an NBC special, and network bosses had to reschedule her performance for the next day. The reason she ran this late was that she was on the phone for 5 whole hours with her divorce attorney.

In turn, this sparked rumors that the divorce was getting nasty and that Nick and Mariah had reached a dead end in their amicable talks, so that all their efforts to “keep it together” for the kids would end up being in vain.

From what Nick is saying in the video below, there is no truth to that report, because he and Mariah are still on for spending Christmas together, like the family they are. They might not be a couple anymore, but they will “always” be a family, no matter what.
