Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon divorce is happening: he filed the papers on December 12, 2014

Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey are truly over: the two were married for 6 years and split in May last year, but word of it only got out much later. Since then and until December, they did not file the divorce papers because they were negotiating the terms of the divorce: they wanted to have everything agreed on before they would take this to court, from money to custody arrangements.

Nick filed the divorce papers before Mariah, it has emerged. This means that they finally ironed out all the details of the split and are getting ready to move on from the failed marriage.

Filing took place last month

TMZ reports that Nick Cannon “beat” Mariah to the punch in filing the divorce papers and that he did it on December 12. The reason it took so much time for this to get out is that neither he nor Mariah said anything about it.

“The date is relevant because on December 3, Mariah showed up 3 hours late to tape a segment for the NBC tree-lighting special,” the publication says.

Mariah was late because she’d spent no less than 5 hours on the phone with her divorce attorneys, because she and Nick couldn’t reach an agreement on certain aspects and she was growing frustrated with the fact that the proceedings were dragging on.

And here’s where things really get interesting: she wanted to get this over with as soon as possible, the report suggests, because she was also in talks with Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for her own residency, which she announced the other day.

“Short story, Mariah has completely detached Nick from her new, very lucrative deal in Vegas,” TMZ notes. She and Nick signed the agreement before she signed the Vegas contract, which means that he’s not getting a penny from that.

Rumor has it that Nick and Mariah don’t have a prenup, hence the many months of talks to settle on the division of property and money, but also on the custody of their twins.

Still friends, always family

Despite the money involved in the split, Nick and Mariah are proof that you can have a decent divorce in showbiz. Though there are rumors that the split wasn’t entirely amicable, they did not drag each other through the mud and didn’t take cheap shots at each other in public.

In fact, whenever a rumor saying that they would made it online, Nick was quick to deny it, either on social media or in interviews. As he put it, because of the beautiful kids they had together, they would always be family and he would always love and respect Mariah, even if they were no longer married.

But one thing is clear right now: if fans still clung to hope that they might get back together, now is the time to face reality, because it’s not happening.
