MMOs need to find stable long-term audiences to succeed

Mark Jacobs, the leader of the team working on Camelot Unchained, believes that niche targeting for MMOs can be more important for their long-term success than simple adoption of the free-to-play business model.

He tells VG247 that, “I’ll take a smaller subscription base that is dedicated, is energised and is excited to play our game, and to work with our game, than ten times that base where I have to deal with a lot of people who really don’t care.”

Camelot Unchained is designed to focus on Player versus Player and on Realm versus Realm battles.

The team at City State Entertainment has already released a video showing 1,000 people battling at the same time, with plans to increase the number to 10,000 before the official launch of the MMO.

The game is expected during 2014.
