Mobile phone carrier Vodafone Australia has just announced the launch of a new Android smartphone on its airwaves, namely the Nexus S by Samsung, the second Google phone on the market, which is available for existing customers as of today.

The new device is set to become available for new customers to the carrier as of March 16th, Vodafone announced.

Nexus S adopters would enjoy a wide range of monthly plans available at their disposal, the wireless carrier announced (starting at $5 per month on a $65 Vodafone Infinite plan).

The Nexus S is the first smartphone in the world to run under Google's new Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, while offering a great combination of Google features and Samsung hardware capabilities.

“As the first operator to launch the highly anticipated Nexus S, we can offer customers the fastest version of Android yet,” John Casey, Director of Marketing at Vodafone Hutchison Australia said.

“Using Gingerbread (Android 2.3) Vodafone customers will be able to get the most from their Google mobile apps and enjoy them on a 4 inch contour display.

“Combined with Vodafone’s great value plans, Nexus S is sure to make its mark on the Australian smartphone market and we’re thrilled to be able to offer this device to our customers.”

The specifications list of the new device includes a 4” Super Clear LCD Contour Display that can deliver a super-high WVGA 480 x 800 pixel resolution, as well as a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back.

The mobile phone arrives on shelves with 16GB of internal memory, a 1GHz Samsung processor with a built-in graphic processor, and great multimedia capabilities, Vodafone announced.

In addition to the usual 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity options, the Nexus S also comes with NFC features (Near Field Connectivity).

“This partnership gives Vodafone customers access to the most innovative hardware solutions from Samsung coupled with the pure Google experience of Android 2.3. The Nexus S brings Vodafone users the latest mobile technology and faster multimedia content with an intuitive experience.”

Both the black and the white flavors of Nexus S are available at Vodafone Australia now, on a number of plans across 12 and 24 month contracts. More info can be found on the carrier's website here.
