A new software update has been released for the Nexus One, bringing the firmware version on the handset to FRG83D, up from FRG83, though with no new OS flavor included into the mix.

While the operating system version on Nexus One remains the same Android 2.2.1 that was released not too long ago for the smartphone, there are a wide range of bug fixes and enhancements included into the mix.

The new software update for Nexus One was pushed out over the air, but the file is also available for a manual download from here, in case there are some who would like to update their devices before the firmware arrives OTA.

The file weighs in at only 1.3MB, and it appears that it consists mainly of patches and fixes for the existing OS and apps on the Nexus One, most probably preparing the device for the near arrival of the new Gingerbread platform version.

Among the changes included in the new release, the guys over at Android Central note that the Froyo framework has been patched, and that the same applies to the application debugger.

The system applications have each received a fix, smaller ones for most of the apps, though larger for Android Market, the Google services framework, and the Google Email application, the news site reports.

As stated above, while there is no Gingerbread flavor included into the mix, the new software update is reportedly paving the way to the upcoming Android platform version.

The arrival of the new platform version was confirmed by Google's CEO himself, who said during the Web 2.0 Summit that the OS update will be released in a few weeks.

Moreover, some of the previous reports on the matter suggested that Nexus One would be the first Android device to be updated to the new OS flavor, but nothing was confirmed officially on the matter until now.

Those of you who would like to manually download and install the new FRG83D software update on your Nexus One devices would find the solution available for download here.
