Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system, is now being delivered to Nexus One units on the airwaves of wireless carrier Vodafone in Europe.

Today, the mobile phone carrier announced the availability of the new software update for its Nexus One users, and also provided a series of details on what it will include, as well as on what they need to do to upgrade their handsets.

Vodafone's customers who would like to install the new software on their devices should know that it will be delivered to all of them over the air.

“A new maintenance release for the Google Nexus One is now available to Vodafone customers. This is an Android platform update to Gingerbread 2.3.4 which introduces a number of fixes and improvements,” the wireless carrier notes on its support website.

As soon as the software is available for a specific device or another, users will receive a notification informing them on the matter. To update their devices, they will simply have to follow the on-screen instructions.

The main improvements included in the new software would be: - UI Enhancements (simpler and slicker) - New Android Keyboard, with easy copy/paste feature - Improved Power Management - Internet Calling support (Voip over SIP) - Multiple Camera Management (front and back). Vodafone also notes that the new software update should arrive on devices as “Build” GRJ22, and that users can check on a successful installation by going to Menu > Settings > About phone, where the new software version should be displayed.

The new Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread OS flavor was released a long time ago for Nexus One handsets that arrived on shelves unlocked but, as it usually happens, carrier-specific units receive it later than that. The new OS flavor was pushed out to the new Nexus S handset as well.
