The feature available via a new add-on

Rooting an Android-based mobile phone seems to be one of the main sources of entertainment for some users out there. This process offers access to additional functionality on the device, and other more, so there are a lot of Android phone owners interested in making a move in the area, especially since a rooted device can have multi-touch features even if they weren't available right from the start.

This is the case with Nexus One by HTC, the Android 2.1-based device that went available at the beginning of the year via Google's own web store, and which reached US users without the multi-touch functionality enabled. However, the same as the previously released Motorola DROID, which sports multi-touch outside the US, Nexus One can also deliver the functionality, especially if one takes the time to root it.

Both the hardware inside the phone and the Android 2.1 operating system feature support for multi-touch, yet it still arrived in the US without it. This being so, the guys over at XDA-Developers looked into the matter, and came up with an add-on that offers users the possibility to bring multi-touch on their new Nexus One device, provided that they are into rooting the device, of course.

Those who are not familiar with what rooting a phone is all about should restrain themselves from going for it, as the device might end up bricked, or might lose some of the features it already has. According to redmondpie, those who are willing to go for it can find all the necessary instructions on the rooting process and on the installation of the Nexus One multitouch add-on around the Internet.

In case you want to learn more on the multi-touch capabilities Nexus One might get, you should take a look at the video below, to see the feature demonstrated in its browser (including pinch-to-zoom). However, we do not recommend rooting the phone, especially since there are a series of risks involved in the process.
