Canonical has been developing Ubuntu Touch for more than a year and, so far, the supported devices haven't changed much, with the exception of the announcement about dropping the Nexus (maguro) support, but now a new member has joined the family.

Although one of the most asked questions in the mailing list and on the forums is about the Ubuntu Touch support for Nexus 5, another piece of hardware is now officially supported by Canonical, which is just as important.

In a keynote delivered for the Ubuntu Developer Summit that’s just started, Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Canonical, said that Nexus 7 2013 is now officially recognized as a development platform for Ubuntu Touch.

“Super excited about it, seems to perform really beautifully, I just flash this one today, and it came straight up, no issues. I guess that the team has promoted this device (Nexus 7 2013) into the official supported category,” said Mark Shuttleworth.

This shouldn't be much of a surprise. Many Ubuntu developers have been showing their work running on Nexus 7 2013 tablets for quite some time, and that device proved to be a success. It’s also a very common form factor, so it makes sense that Ubuntu developers also provide support for it.
