Although 2014 has been long said to bring to the market a Nexus 6 smartphone, the last device in the popular series of handsets, the latest reports on the matter suggest that this might not happen in the end.

A recent tweet coming from @evleaks claims that there will be no Nexus 6 smartphone released this year, and that the lineup will be ended faster than originally believed.

However, we were previously expecting the Nexus 6 to land on shelves this year, so as to mark the end of the popular generation of devices.

Moreover, @evleaks also suggests that Google will launch a Silver series of devices to replace the Nexus family of phones, something that falls in line with previous reports on the matter.

Apparently, the first devices in this Silver lineup will be released sometime in February next year, though no further details on the matter have been provided as of now.

For those out of the loop, we should note that the Silver smartphones are expected to arrive on the market with a stock Android experience, something that the Nexus handsets can offer at the moment.

The Silver series of devices has been said before to be intended to replace both Nexus and Google Play phones starting next year, given the fact that they will arrive on shelves with the pure Android OS, without customizations coming from manufacturers.

Moreover, Google was rumored to plan on including only a small number of smartphones in the series at a time and to impose various hardware limitations to phone makers interested in participating in the program.

The Silver series smartphones should include high-end hardware specifications, so as to be able to offer a great overall experience to their users. Moreover, Google is expected to offer full-time support for these devices, yet it remains to be seen what exactly that will imply.

Apparently, only a couple of manufacturers have agreed to release phones in the new series as of now, such as Motorola, but more of them are expected to join the party.

No official confirmation on these smartphones has been provided as of now, but with more and more rumors on the matter suggesting that the Silver program will kick off next year, chances are that things will indeed turn out this way in the end.

A great deal of details on these smartphones still remains a mystery, including info on pricing, market availability, feature set, and the like. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before more on this emerges, so stay tuned to learn the news.
