The Nexus 6 is constantly out of stock with retailers

Google launched the Nexus 6 back in November as the first smartphone taking advantage of Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Since then the device has been constantly out of stock, so if you awoke one night feeling a sudden craving for a Nexus 6, chances were you couldn't go through with purchasing one.

The Nexus 6 is tough to spot in the wild

The device was most of the time nowhere to be found on the Google Play Store, but not so long ago Motorola started selling the smartphone through their own website too. Which wasn't that much of a help anyhow. At this very moment, those who want to pick up the 64 GB version of the Nexus 6 can’t, as the model is out of stock.

Obviously, there’s great demand for the Nexus 6, so what’s happening here? Why are customers willing to spend good money on Google’s latest smartphone unable to do so right away?

The mystery is resolved by Google’s CFO Patrick Pichette who, during the company’s Q4 2014 earnings call, talked about the Nexus 6 and why there were so few items of its kind in the wild (as seen at Android Authority).

Pichette highlighted what we were telling you above, the handset has been very well received as a new phone, but the company had real issues with securing inventory and supplying all the units that were demanded. The reason for that is that Google did not expect the Nexus 6 to be that popular.

We just didn't expect customers to be so psyched about the Nexus 6

Pichette kept quiet on how many Nexus 6 the company actually sold and what the initial “forecasted demand” was. Given that the Nexus 6 sells for a pretty chunky price of $649 / €572, it might make sense why Google didn't think that a lot of people will rush to purchase the device. But it was wrong.

Pichette didn't mention if Google has any plans of doing something about the Nexus 6 shortage, but we have to assume it does.

Outside the Google Play store and Motorola e-shop, the Nexus 6 can also be purchased from Best Buy, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and US Cellular.
