LG and Google are expected to team up for 2015 Nexus 5

While most of us were expecting Google to announce not one but two Nexus smartphones this year during the I/O 2015 keynote, the search giant had a different plan in mind, so it revealed jack squat in terms of handsets.

Still, this doesn’t mean Google won’t extend its Nexus lineup this year. Browsing through the Android M promo videos on Google Developers, you will probably notice a peculiar thing - a red Nexus 5 with a fingerprint scanner.

But wasn’t the Nexus 5 discontinued? Yes, the smartphone is no longer available from the Google Play Store in the US, so if you want to purchase a new one right now, you won’t have the means to do so.

Still, we’ve been hearing rumors that LG is working on a brand new Nexus 5 smartphone which will supposedly make it out on the market later this year. So, is this the Nexus phone we’re seeing in the Google Developers promo videos? It’s a possibility.

A mysterious Nexus 5 shows up in an Android M-related video

The part where the Nexus 5 shows up deals with Android Pay, which Google officially introduced a few days ago.

As you can see in the video and the screenshots below, the fingerprint scanner is positioned on the back, which is a bit odd given the fact that the current consensus is that the technology should be living upfront.

The video shows a tutorial of how users might go about using Android Pay from a Nexus smartphone. But isn’t it also teasing the next-gen LG Nexus 5?

The handset shown in the video might never become a real life product after all. But with Android Pay out and about, it’s pretty obvious that the next Nexus handsets will bundle a fingerprint scanner.

For those who aren’t up to date with the latest Nexus rumors, we’re taking the opportunity to remind you that the upcoming LG Nexus is expected to arrive with a 5.2-inch display, Snapdragon 808 processor, and a 2,700 mAh battery pumping power under the hood.

There’s also a larger Nexus coming, manufactured by Huawei, which should make a debut with a 5.7-inch display and a more advanced Snapdragon 810 processor on board.
