Looking forward to the next iPhone refresh, Apple is developing not one, but two new smartphones with curved displays, one measuring as much as 5.5 inches in diagonal, said a person familiar with the matter.

Bloomberg this weekend has been busy digging up details on the upcoming iPhone 6, and today reports that the fruity company headquartered in Cupertino, California has a big upgrade planned for next year.

The rumor, spawned from discussions with “a person familiar with the plans,” bodes well with the company’s bi-annual redesign.

“Apple Inc. is developing new iPhone designs including bigger screens with curved glass and enhanced sensors that can detect different levels of pressure,” this person reportedly said.

There are two models planned for launch “in the second half of next year,” one of which will sport a 5.5-inch screen.

The other will have a 4.7-inch display, and both will use “glass that curves downward at the edges,” according to this unnamed source.

Subsequent models will employ “advanced sensors” that can sense “heavy or light touches,” the report adds.

Apple is having its arm twisted to go beyond the 5-inch mark next year because of the competitive smartphone industry where Samsung has gained a lot of momentum.

The South Korean electronics maker already sells a curved-display smartphone, the Galaxy Round.

Samsung has also launched a smartwatch ahead of Apple, in what seems like an attempt to beat the Cupertino giant at its own game - innovation.

However, Apple is known to take time to perfect its technologies before deploying them in products for everyday consumers, which translates into many advantages in the long run.

For the past three years, Apple has launched new iPhones in fall. According to this rumor, next-year’s refresh should occur in summer, likely at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
