Microsoft has confirmed the different entertainment-oriented features and improvements that are included in the next Xbox One firmware update that's set to debut later this month around the world, including support for DLNA streaming and MKV files, not to mention other Live TV additions.

The Xbox One console received a lot of criticism when, at its initial reveal, Microsoft focused a lot on entertainment features and other such things, while leaving most of the gaming-related announcements for the subsequent E3 2013 press conference.

Even so, while Microsoft has since changed its strategy to focus more on gaming, it hasn't forgotten about the different entertainment features that are inside the Xbox One and how they can be improved.

Lots of entertainment improvements are coming

After revealing that the next Xbox One firmware update improves the multitasking abilities of the device via the Snap function, Microsoft has now confirmed the various enhancements coming to the entertainment features of the console.

The most important improvement is going to affect the built-in Media Player, which can now stream files via the DLNA protocol, as well as play MKV files that are quite popular nowadays.

"Members of the preview program who have also downloaded the latest version of the Media Player app will now have support for DLNA streaming. With this update, you will be able to easily access and play music, watch photo slideshows or movies stored on home media servers and devices that support the DLNA server protocols," Microsoft explains on the Xbox Wire.

"Additionally, you will now be able to playback MKV files stored on a USB device or a device on your home network that supports DLNA streaming."

Live TV and OneGuide enhancements are also on the way

The Live TV system is also going to see its capabilities improve with the upcoming update, as it will show the top 10 most watched shows in your region, filtered depending on whether or not you can actually view them. For now, the system is coming to Xbox One users in the US, Canada, and the UK, but plans are in motion for a global release.

The Xbox One digital TV tuner is going to launch on October 21 in certain European markets, and the new firmware already brings support for it. The OneGuide system has also been improved, while internet TV apps are going to be supported inside it.

Last but not least, further SmartGlass enhancements, such as the ability to use a mobile device to control the Xbox, TV, or cable box are also coming in the update.

As of yet, it's unclear when the new Xbox One system software update is going to launch, so expect more news in the near future. Until then, check out a video of the firmware in action below.
