World of Warcraft will receive a brand new update "in the coming weeks" according to developer Blizzard, which has tried to explain the drop in the number of subscribers after the release of the Mists of Pandaria expansion.

World of Warcraft is still one of the most popular subscription-based online games out there, but in recent years developer Blizzard has reported drops in terms of the players with active monthly subscriptions.

According to the latest figures, there are now 9.6 million users out there and Blizzard has tried to explain just how the World of Warcraft players have evolved and are only looking for new high-end content.

"We have seen an evolution in player behavior since the launch of Cataclysm. Players consume content quickly – they’re more apt to come and go from the community, which is why we are targeting more frequent updates," said Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime, via VG247.

The executive also confirmed that the WoW development team was hard at work on more frequent content updates and revealed that the next one would be released in the coming weeks.

"The development team continues to stick with the plan of more frequent content updates in the wake of the expansion launch, applying lessons that we have learned from past expansions."

What's more, Morhaime also discussed the state of World of Warcraft and how the online game isn't just competing with other such titles but also with other types of entertainment.

"I think another thing to note is, if you compare the month following Cataclysm and the month following Mists of Pandaria, the trailing months have been stronger with Mists and have seen an increase in engagement in all regions."

"We’ve always had competition for World of Warcraft in all markets. I think it’s fair to say that competition has increased, but I think it’s also important to point out that World of Warcraft is competing against all forms of entertainment for leisure time, and so that just underscores the need for us to continue creating new content to keep up engagement."

World of Warcraft is going to receive plenty of new content updates in the near future, but it's unclear if a new expansion, like Mists of Pandaria, will be released anytime soon.
