Mass Effect 4 is currently in the works, but an official announcement is still pending

Electronic Arts will be showcasing its new entry in the Mass Effect franchise at its media briefing, taking place on June 9.

The information comes from Portuguese website Scubtrovers, that has recently spoken to some sources at GameStop, who confirmed the upcoming reveal.

The next game will not be dubbed Mass Effect 4 but instead will have a subtitle, seemingly Mass Effect: Origins. But in spite of its name, the game won't be a prequel, instead starting an entirely new trilogy, set in the same universe, in the aftermath of the events that took place in Mass Effect 3.

That means that fans of the first trilogy will miss the presence of Commander Shepard, the protagonist of BioWare's acclaimed series.

The absence of Shepard will hopefully not detract from the upcoming game, which seems to set a trend at BioWare, considering that there already is another popular role-playing game set in a series from the developer titled in the same manner, Dragon Age: Origins. Which is not bad at all.

Perhaps we'll be able to explore several origin stories? Perhaps an entirely new cycle seeking to redeem the universally bashed ending of the Mass Effect series?

Whatever the truth may be, until the actual announcement is made, take this news with a grain of salt. Mass Effect 4 is a real thing though, said to be very ambitious.
