Olympus has been rumored to be working on an OM-D camera for a while and the device has now been confirmed to arrive as the E-M5 successor.

The current consensus is that a new OM-D mirrroless camera will arrive on the market in January 2015, so we’re probably going to see it on display at CES 2015.

New OM-D mirrorless with 4K coming in 2015

The producing company itself confirmed that the upcoming camera would be marketed as an E-M5 replacement during an interview at Photokina 2014.

Now sources familiar with the matter talking to 43 Rumors are back with more information related to the upcoming shooter. They are once again confirming that the new camera will be the next-gen E-M5, but they also offer a glimpse of the device’s specifications.

According to them, the new mirrorless will be capable of shooting in 4K and will also be weather sealed. Since Panasonic introduced its popular GH4 camera, the competition has struggled to bring something similar to the market.

Sony launched the A75, which is also capable of shooting 4K movies, but the trouble is that it can only do so using an external recorder.

As more and more customers are showing their interest in 4K-capable cameras, device manufacturers are being pressured to launch more products of this kind.

And the new Olympus OM-D is one such device. The camera will be able to capture video at multiple frame rate options, including 24fps, 25fps and 30fps.

When the camera goes on sale, it will compete against similar offerings such as the Panasonic GH4 and Sony A75. But the E-M1 will remain the flagship OM-D device.

Other specs have not been yet disclosed

The other piece of info disclosed by the sources is related to weather sealing. So in theory, photographers and videographers will be able to complete their jobs even in unfriendly environmental conditions.

Other specifications remain a mystery for the time being, but the rumor mill said at one point that the new OM-D would most likely take advantage of a unique image sensor technology, which will probably be part of the Micro Four Thirds garden.

Those talking about the camera in the past have said that the device will be quite exciting, so we expect a lot of good things from the new Olympus OM-D camera when it comes to the market in a few months.

In related news, it was recently revealed that Olympus might be working on a device similar to the lens-style Sony QX camera. The shooter is designed to look like an optics and will attach to a smartphone or tablet device.

So we expect to see a lot of interesting things come out of Olympus in the near future.
