The next-gen Hitman game from Square Enix Montreal has apparently been canceled, according to the resumes of several staff from the studio, who also offer more details about the failed reimagining of the classic series.

The Hitman franchise was developed by IO Interactive but, after the studio's acquisition by Square Enix, the company confirmed that its new Montreal-based developer would make a next-gen Hitman game.

Since then, not a lot has been heard, and last year Square Enix Montreal confirmed that it had shifted its focus towards mobile games.

Now, the resume of Richard Knight, via Videogamer, confirms that the new Hitman title was canceled last year.

What's more, other CVs from the studio's staff confirm that the game was a reimagining of the series with first and third-person sequences. An online mode with microtransactions was also mentioned by some developers but it's unclear how it worked.

As of yet, the future of the Hitman series is still murky, although it seems only IO Interactive is working on it, as Square Enix Montreal is building a mobile game.
