We all know that Google likes naming its new, major Android releases after sweets, but what we don't know is the exact name of the next flavor of the mobile operating system.

Speculation on the possible naming that Google would user for it already arose, but nothing was confirmed on the matter for the time being.

At least not officially, since an unofficial confirmation did emerge, through the AOSP issues forum (Open Handset Alliance Project), via Android Central.

Answering to a post on the said forums, project member romainguy mentioned that a specific issue is set to be resolved as soon as the next flavor of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, will arrive.

The entire forum post reads the following: “A bug fix will be provided in Ice Cream Sandwich.”

Previously, rumors on the possible naming of the new Android release as Ice Cream did emerge, but no one knew the actual name of the OS flavor.

What also remains to be seen is whether the new release would arrive as an Android 2.x flavor, or will be included in the Android 3.x branch.

Back in February, during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Google's CEO Eric Schmidt announced that the new iteration of the platform would include elements from both Gingerbread and Honeycomb, the latest releases in each branch.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread was released in December last year for handsets, while Android 3.0 Honeycomb was launched in January with support for tablet PCs and their large touchscreen displays.

Based on the fact that Frozen Yogurt and Ice Cream would be related, some suggest that ICS might be included in the Android 2.x line, as Android 2.2 Froyo was.

Google's first ICS announcement might take place in the following weeks, possible during the Google I/O conference, and more info on this could be unveiled at that time, but nothing is certain on the matter.
