Modular technology is apparently becoming a strong trend

This weekend we told you about an innovative concept for wearables proposed by BLOCKS that borrowed cues from Google’s Project Ara and applied it to smartwatches. But if modular smartphones and smart time measuring devices aren't enough for you, we have another one.

Introducing the Might Cast Nex Band, a wrist wearable device that can be considered a charm bracelet of sorts and has been designed for teenagers and young adults.

It will be able to connect wirelessly to the user’s smartphone via Bluetooth LE, but that’s not all one can do with it. Like with the BLOCKS smartwatch, the creators of the project allow customers to choose what modules or Mods they want to attach to their wearable.

As an example, imagine you want to be receiving notifications from Facebook or being able to share your current locations with your acquaintances.

Depending on each user’s specific set of needs, Mighty Cast allows the implementation of up to five Modes to be plugged into the device at any time. When users receive a notification, its specific Mod will light up alerting the wearer something is going on.

Different Mods come pre-loaded with different set of abilities, so no two Nex Bands will be alike. Teens and youngsters are also encouraged to exchange Mods. Saying goodbye to one of your Mods doesn't mean you have lost them forever.

On the contrary, Might Cast offers a special touch here, by allowing users to track their previous Mods to check their current location and see how far they have traveled around the world.

Mods can work in concert with a dedicated Nex smartphone app, but third-party developers will be able to tackle them too.

Anyway, Might Cast is offering the wearable as a “razor blade” model, meaning the band itself is quite inexpensive. This is a means of actually encouraging users to purchase as much Mods as they like.

For those who’d like to make their wearable more stylish, there’s a fashionable element too, in the sense that a line of branded Mods are planned for the future in collaboration with a bunch of third-party partner companies.

For the moment, customers can pre-order the Nex Band for $49 / €34 a pop, with expected shipments scheduled for Q4 2014.

Mighty Cast is taking early pre-orders at the moment, but when that period expires, the band will sell for $99 / €71. We think Nex Band is a pretty cool idea, but it wouldn't hurt if Migthy Cast allows users to customize the band itself, too.
