Last week, American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu talked about the upcoming iPods and how they could very well be delayed by as much as six months. Of course, since Apple has not made any public statement about when such new iPod models will be released, they can't exactly be delayed from a public point of view. However, in terms of the company's internal deadlines things can
be very different indeed.
It seems that the problems are arising from too many changes being attempted at the same time. Not only is Apple transitioning from PortalPlayer's system-on-a-chip (SoC) to Samsung's solution, but they are also trying to incorporate a larger display while at the same time increasing battery life.
Interestingly enough, a recent AppleInsider report details the problems mentioned by Wu, however, it also mentions that it is yet unclear if these problems will manifest in delays or not, and if so, then by how much.
"Over 90 percent of the defects in the project are said to have been "ironed out" at this time. Therefore, it may be too early to tell whether the remaining issues will force Apple to delay," Prince McLean reports for AppleInsider.
One thing is clear however, Apple will be doing everything it can to have the new iPods ready in time for the Christmas shopping season.
