“[…] A vulnerability on the 3.1.3 OS. This is what has enabled us to Activate, Jailbreak and even unlock it's [sic] baseband,” the team claims

Members of an alleged team of French hackers claim they’ve managed to exploit a vulnerability within iPhone OS 3.1.3 to ultimately activate, jailbreak and even unlock its baseband. They uphold they are not like “the other teams,” in that their solution “can activate and jailbreak your iPhone in the same time,” which should eliminate problems for those unable to activate their devices. The hackers allege their exploit works just as well for iPhone OS 4.0 betas, and the iPad OS (version 3.2 of the iPhone OS).

The team’s blog post reads,

"

Hey guys we are a new team on iPhone jailbreaking world

"Let us introduce our selves: We are 3 french students in USA, We study Communication Sciences since 2007 in an american university.

"Our story began with love for iPhone, We buy every june the brand new iPhone that apple announces, So we encounter problem each holiday we leave the united states in the direction of France, Then we can't use our french sim cards.

"From here the idea started, We decided to mix our love for the iPhone with our study this is what gave us the inspiration to search for vulnerabilities on the OS in general.

"In the last days we exploited a vulnerability on the 3.1.3 OS This is what has enabled us to Activate, Jailbreak and even unlock it's [sic] baseband.

"YES, Unlike the other teams our exploit can activate and jailbreak your iPhone in the same time, This eliminates the problem of those who can not activate their iPhones.

"And in the same time our exploit works for all new Firmwares 3.1.3, 4.0 and even the iPad 3.2 Believe us!"

Needless to point out, the post seems far from credible.

The Hope Crew continues by saying that it created its blog to ask for the iPhone users’ opinion on the matter of releasing its jailbreak tool before iPhone OS 4.0 went out. It encourages visitors to answer by posting comments. The blog is ad-supported (meaning it relies on hits to make a profit), unlike that of the iPhone Dev Team, which still provides the most reliable jailbreak and unlock tools for iPhone users worldwide.

“What we want from you just to tell us do you want us to publish the new program or wait until the final version 4.0 release in june,” the Hope Crew’s post reads on. It adds, “We already told you: we are unlike the other teams, we only aim to help iPhone users, We are ready to Implement what you demand.”

“Please send your comments, if you agree with publishing the program we will do so within a period of less than a week,” the post ends.
