Team wanted to get creative in developing the battlefield

Crysis 3 was officially revealed recently, after a number of leaks and rumors, and a section of the fan base criticized the fact that developer Crytek was again using New York as the setting for the game rather than visit a new area of Earth under alien assault.

But the team working on the first-person shooter says that their choice was not linked to ease of development but to getting the space they need for creative freedom.

Rasmus Hojengaard, who is the director of creative development at Crytek, told Rock, Paper, Shotgun that, “One thing I want to underline is that we did not do this because it’s easier for us. All of the assets have been created from the ground-up. There is nothing left of the New York you saw in Crysis 2. As you saw in the demo, there’s no resemblance to what we did before.”

He added, “I mean, the example I’ve used is let’s say there’s a war, and your hometown is bombed, and so is your friend’s.

“Going to see your hometown is going to be completely different from your friend’s because you already have a connection to that place versus a place you’ve never been before. Although it’s obviously not the same, it’s still a little bit of that principle.”

The first Crysis impressed gamers with the way it simulated vegetation, something that the sequel dialed down in order to render a more urban setting.

For the third video game in the series, Crytek plans to mix the two and New York was perfect for that, allowing developers to have the structure of an urban area while also introducing areas with heavy vegetation growth.

Crytek also promises to deliver a better looking city than that seen in the second game and more complex battles.

Crysis 3 is in development for the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and the PC and will be launched during spring 2013.
