On Monday, New York officially launched its first bicycle sharing program. Presently, a total of 6,000 bikes are available to cycling enthusiasts in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Rumor has it that, since people seem to have really taken a liking to this project, 4,000 more bikes and 330 more stations will soon be rolled out in Queens.

Apart from encouraging people to get some exercise, these bikes yield noteworthy environmental benefits, seeing how they are some of the greenest means of transportation out there. Inhabitat says that, for the time being, New Yorkers can take a bike out for a spin for just 45 minutes at a time.

However, starting June 2, they'll have the possibility to get 24-hour passes for just $10 (€7.74) and even 7-days passes for $25 (€19.37).

“We now have an entirely new transportation network without spending any taxpayer money,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at the news conference held when launching this program.
