It may not get much recognition, but Yahoo Mail is still one of the most popular webmail clients, used by hundreds of millions of people. It recently got a major revamp and Yahoo is now following up on the launch, boasting about the fact that 50 million people already use the latest version of Yahoo Mail, about three weeks after launch.
But Yahoo wants everyone to switch over, users will get notifications over the coming months, urging them to upgrade. Considering that Yahoo is still running the ancient Yahoo Mail Classic, it's unlikely that it will be forcing users to update, but it seems people are satisfied with the new Yahoo Mail and are switching over on their own. "The newest version of Yahoo! Mail is out of beta and ready for you!," Stephanie Shum, Sr. Product Manager for Yahoo! Mail, wrote. "We’ve got over 50 million users actively using the newest version of Yahoo! Mail and we want you to join them in this faster, safer, easier experience. In the coming months you’ll be asked to upgrade to the latest version of Yahoo! Mail, but you don’t have to wait," she added. The new Yahoo Mail spent several months in beta, during which time users wanting to see what Yahoo has cooking could switch over to the new client. Yahoo also introduced new features throughout this time. After thorough testing, the new Yahoo Mail was rolled out for everyone, but it's not a forced update, users have to choose to switch over. This is because most users, especially Yahoo ones, don't like change, especially one as big as the complete revamp of Yahoo Mail. But Yahoo is urging everyone to upgrade and will continue to 'pester' users with notifications. And it's not done with improving the new Yahoo Mail either, the company says there quite a few new features and functionality already in the works.

| Comment #1.1 by: Northernlights on 28 Jul 2011, 06:13 GMT | That is exactly what happened to me. They invited me to check it out and then you are stuck with it, no going back. |
| Comment #2 by: Elliander on 26 Jun 2011, 04:41 UTC | reply to this comment | They sent me an e-mail saying:
"...in about a month from the date of this email, when you sign in to your Yahoo! Mail account, we will ask you to upgrade to the newest version of Yahoo! Mail."
Since other people I know had their e-mails "upgraded" automatically I asked if I would be able to switch back they said:
"We have removed the "Return to Original Mail" link from the help menu as we're strongly encouraging all users to migrate to the newest version of Yahoo! Mail."
(Funny, that would discourage me from trying it! Not encourage me!)
So the only reason they have 50 Million Users is because they forced those users to upgrade. Also, since no one is able to go back to classic mail, it doesn't surprise me that these numbers are consistent.
If in my case the change isn't forced on me I will opt out for as long as I am told I won't be able to switch back. I have no real incentive to try it when I know it's a permanent change. If it is forced on me I will stop using yahoo mail entirely. |
| Comment #3 by: CJA on 27 Jun 2011, 13:58 UTC | reply to this comment | The newest yahoo is slower, not intuitive and makes simple tasks a chore. I hate it!!! |
| Comment #3.1 by: mikael_dobrescu on 29 Jun 2011, 10:40 GMT | Yes, indeed, they forced everybody to upgrade just like they forced me. I hate to be forced to do something, especially when I don't want to. So I will give up using yahoo. It will be easy, because they are many others on the market. |
| Comment #4 by: westbankkid on 14 Jul 2011, 03:38 UTC | reply to this comment | Quit the "BLOODY" pestering and we will all be happy. If I have to put up with many more popups asking me to change I will dump Yahoo. They should at least give a person the option to tell them to Go to Hell with their beta |
| Comment #5 by: magudude on 23 Jul 2011, 20:00 UTC | reply to this comment | That's crap, the new Yahoo Mail is horrible! We switched because we are being FORCED to switch. I just switched back to classic by turning off Java; at least I'll have it for a month before they get rid of classic mail for good.
The new Yahoo Mail is no longer user friendly in the slightest. It's slower, buggy, and very inefficient: clicking "back" while checking email takes you to the log in screen instead of back to whatever email you were viewing; The "send" button has been moved from the bottom to the top of the screen, so after typing an email you have to scroll to the top to send the email; marking or moving emails doesn't do anything half of the time. This is just scratching the surface...it looks sleek, and it has some cool new features, but in terms of functionality it's a mess. PLEASE, Yahoo, we want the classic mail to STAY! |
| Comment #6 by: magudude on 23 Jul 2011, 20:01 UTC | reply to this comment | Oh, and now my Blackberry will no longer sync with Yahoo...smooth move Ex-Lax! |
| Comment #7 by: Northernlights on 28 Jul 2011, 06:11 UTC | reply to this comment | I signed out of my emails and when I wanted to sign back in a page was there to "upgrade now". There was no other option, I could not get my old Yahoo, I was forced and tricked into having this new Yahoo mail. I don't like it!! |
| Comment #8 by: REGGIE on 30 Jul 2011, 09:39 UTC | reply to this comment | I hate the new Yahoo Mail. On my machine it takes longer and requires more clicks, also it isnt as clear to see. All I want is something SIMPLE. Yahoo classic was perfect for my needs, I havent the time to fiddle about learning this new thing . How can I go back, and dont say there are options, these have been removed by Yahoo. |
| Comment #8.1 by: rob on 10 Aug 2011, 15:43 GMT | just change your screen resolution to the lowest you can and login into yahoo mail and it will change you back to classic automatically since the new yahoo mail cannot handle the low resolution. |
| Comment #9 by: oceanskate7 on 09 Aug 2011, 04:35 UTC | reply to this comment | "it's unlikely that it will be forcing users to update, but it seems people are satisfied with the new Yahoo Mail and are switching over on their own."
IT'S NOT UNLIKELY! YAHOO IS FORCING ME TO UPDATE!
At first it said that for a month, up until August 8th, 2011, I would be reminded to upgrade. Which means that every time I log in, I'd see a page telling me to upgrade. But I could click, "No Thanks". I looked forward to the 8th because I thought that meant no more annoying screen while logging in and I could keep my Yahoo Classic.
Well the 8th came and the "No Thanks" in small print disapeared! And now all I have is "Please Upgrade" button and it says that if I click that, I have agreed to their new Terms of Service and privacy policies!
IN OTHER WORDS, I CAN'T GET INTO MY EFFEN EMAIL unless I agree to change to the new system! Why bother to ask me to "Please upgrade" if they are forcing me?
And if they are forcing me, and forcing me to agree with new policies, that usually means something sneaky is happening. And I'd bet if I read their mile long TOS, I will find it. Anyone who knows how lousy facebook is about controlling their sheeple with their unfair policies, knows what can happen.
Anyway, they should NOT be bragging about FORCING 50 million people to change over!
And you know what? I only send very simple emails with no HTML, and rarely a picture. I like it like that, but NO, Yahoo must include all this instant message spyware junk, along with all this automated cr_apola. They are counting on the majority of uninformed sheep to just jump in, and they will. And if they resist, it's then by FORCE!
Please comment if this has happened to you too! I have NO opt out button, or any way to get away from it. I can NOT see my emails unless I AGREE to upgrade. This rots! |
| Comment #10 by: tindude on 17 Aug 2011, 11:12 UTC | reply to this comment | The reason yahoo want you to update is obvious from the terms on the nag screen. They are changing their terms to get you to agree to having your email monitored by Yahoo and also to target adds at you. It is nothing to do with security and more to do with Yahoo making more money and keeping an eye on you. the new version is cluttered with features you won't use and slow. |
| Comment #11 by: Karen on 18 Aug 2011, 01:45 UTC | reply to this comment | The print is too small to easily read. I have changed the print size and saved the change several times to no avail!
I dislike this very much. |
| Comment #12 by: FYI on 21 Aug 2011, 05:58 UTC | reply to this comment | To go back to the old Yahoo, it seems you could (1) go to Yahoo Mail using some unsupported browser (like Opera, etc.) or (2) lower the screen resolution below the limit Yahoo Mail wants. (But, do not know how long these 'options' would be available in the future.)
As for myself, the newest version is much slower than the previous one, so I now am using the Yahoo Classic after several years being away from it. |
| Comment #13 by: paul on 29 Aug 2011, 12:24 UTC | reply to this comment | The new Yahoo mail is awful. No spell check on new messages, no contacts on line, slow, difficult, it is awful. I am switching to Gmail. |
| Comment #14 by: Thomas on 05 Sep 2011, 10:14 UTC | reply to this comment | This is a trash story written by Yahoo itself. It is not for yahoo to decide what is better. That remains the responsibility of the customer. I have refused to upgrade but it annoys me to keep being asked to. The best yahoo would have done was to give people choices and tell them the advantages of each. I am writing from Kenya, we in Africa have fought dictatorships and yahoo will not dictage to me. Am shifting my communication towards google. |
| Comment #14.1 by: Lucian Parfeni on 05 Sep 2011, 11:03 GMT | Good luck getting Google to revert a new feature or update in Gmail. Google doesn't offer any choice when it comes to updates either, in fact, it probably fares worst. I'm not saying it's fair, it's just the way these companies (and the web) works. |
| Comment #15 by: possum on 10 Sep 2011, 00:41 UTC | reply to this comment | The new Yahoo mail sucks and I will not "upgrade." They are a persistant bunch of jerks though. |
| Comment #16 by: ThatDeborahGirl on 15 Sep 2011, 21:17 UTC | reply to this comment | If you want to switch back to the old Yahoo mail follow these instructions.
Step 1. Log Out of your yahoo mail by clicking Log out.
Step 2. Make sure all internet browser windows are closed.
Step 3. Go into Control Panel and lower your screen resolution to the lowest possible setting.
Step 4. Open your browser and log into your Yahoo mail. You will get a message saying that your resolution is too low handle the new mail. Would you like to switch back to Yahoo Classic Mail. Click "YES".
Step 5. Put your resolution settings back to where they were.
Also: Anytime you see the page asking you to switch to the new Yahoo Mail, DON'T CLICK THE LARGE YELLOW BUTTON. Look for the last small line of type that is asking if you want to stay with Yahoo Mail Classic and click on that to get back into your normal inbox. |

I followed your instructions and I'm back to Classic Mail!

| Comment #22.1 by: New Yahoo - Gash, not flashy on 27 Oct 2011, 18:31 GMT | ThatDeborahGirl - You are AMAZING! thank you so much for bringing be back to my beloved Yahoo Classic. I hope I dont have to do that every time I want to log in, but it may be worth it. Cheers, |
| Comment #23 by: Gash, not flashy on 27 Oct 2011, 18:14 UTC | reply to this comment | Bring back Yahoo Classic. I am a long time yahoo user, and this new Yahoo Mail is utter rubbish. Slow, clumsy, unresponsive. Looks fun, feels * . |
| Comment #24 by: Frustrated on 28 Oct 2011, 21:18 UTC | reply to this comment | My iMac desk top is fairly new and worked fine with the old yahoo mail. Now I see the spinning icon wheel of Apple all the time. My inbox mail does not open quickly and I have to reload and sign in half a dozen times before I can get into my mail. This is really frustrating. I hate the waste of time too. I dislike not seeing someone's email address and just their name. The spell check is also hard to use, correcting one word at a time. Also, if you have a mouse that doesn't like right clicking... it is very time consuming. |
| Comment #25 by: Try this for Classic on 31 Oct 2011, 16:08 UTC | reply to this comment | how to access yahoo mail classic without upgrading........
Try this for Classic
When you login it stops at a screen with only choice is forced to upgrade, can't do anything else, not even logout.
Do not click upgrade link.
Copy/paste the URL to temporary place (notepad etc.)
Use your URL to construct new URL as shown by replacing parts.
Your URL (example):
»us.mg4.mail.yahoo.com/neo/trap?dm=bk&clmigstart=20110620&ncrumb=Dr1iOl4sLUf5&.rand=625813647
Edited URL (example):
»us.mg4.mail.yahoo.com/neo/optOut?rs=1&ncrumb=Dr1iOl4sLUf5&.rand=625813647&once=true
Remove &once=true at end of URL to use classic permanently.
Has not yet been tried for reverting back to classic after upgrade.

| Comment #26 by: Me get it yahoo? simple on 15 Nov 2011, 09:26 UTC | reply to this comment | Worst email online now. |
| Comment #27 by: tony0815 on 17 Nov 2011, 03:42 UTC | reply to this comment | The new Yahoo mail is becoming more and more like AOL used to be and we all know where they ended up - At one point internet meant AOL and now they are just about as insignificant as can be. Many young people don't even know what AOL is or was.
But anyway SWITCH BACK TO CLASSIC MAIL is possible folks!
Log out of Yahoo, close your browser and change your monitor screen resolution to the lowest possible setting (800 x 600 if you can). Then open yahoo mail and it will tell you that it can not use this setting and it asks you to switch to Yahoo Mail Classic. Do so, then log out of your account, close the browser, go back to your monitor settings and change them back to what you had before.
From then on ignore all requests by Yahoo to upgrade by finding the text link that says 'continue to classic mail'
It's real simple ;) |
| Comment #28 by: Jack on 18 Nov 2011, 21:30 UTC | reply to this comment | If it aint broke don't fix it,classic did the job,new version is rubbish. Will someone at Yahoo please read these comments and put things right? I doubt it,I certainly won't wait to see if things change,I just hope the "reported" 50 million users drop yahoo like thousands of other people have done already, and as I am about to do.I gave it a try as I didn't have any choice, enough of that trial period, bye bye Yahoo! |
| Comment #29 by: singingedwina on 22 Nov 2011, 10:40 UTC | reply to this comment | The new account is total rubbish. Loads of poor reviews about it being slow and jumping around all fit in with my experience. When i reply to an email it's often minutes before I can type. If I try too soon it jumps to the bottom of the page. The drop down for folders disappears when I try to click on a folder and so I have to drag things from my inbox. The folder I'm heading for does not highlight properly and I often have to retrieve an email from the folder it ended up in erroneously. IT'S RUBBISH |
| Comment #30 by: Agent86 on 05 Jan 2012, 02:28 UTC | reply to this comment | It stinks the old yahoo rocked whats wrong with the old ?
But if you must get this error message saying your resolution is too low, then open any of the links on the error page by right clicking and opening in new window or new tab that should get you into your mail |
| Comment #31 by: foolishfish on 05 Jan 2012, 22:05 UTC | reply to this comment | They forced the upgrade on me, so I wrote them a letter explaining why I was leaving yahoo! mail, and the next time I logged in, my old mail was back. That's been over 2 months ago. |
| Comment #32 by: H8Liars on 07 Jan 2012, 05:32 UTC | reply to this comment | Actually the new Yahoo mail service only has 50 million users because they have been FORCED to upgrade. You cannot access your email otherwise! I've tried & I give up. No one likes being forced to do anything. Upgrades = downloads & downloads cost money when your using mobile internet! Idiots! |
