Report claims that Windows Threshold is set to arrive in the third quarter of 2014

Microsoft is already working on a huge update for Windows 8.1 and even though previous rumors claimed that it could arrive in early 2015, a new report suggests that the third quarter of 2014 could bring us this new major release.

MSFTnerd, who has until now leaked plenty of details regarding Microsoft's new projects, writes that Windows Threshold is on the table for a Q3 2014 launch, with Terry Myerson, currently in charge of the OS division at Microsoft, meeting with several other high-profile executives to discuss the project.

If all these details are true, Microsoft should start the hard work on Threshold in the beginning of 2014, even though it appears that some new features have already been agreed for the new OS version.

Windows Threshold is expected to bring a common core for touch and voice-first devices and mouse-first devices, the source writes, which means that Microsoft is indeed planning to bring its future Windows releases closer.

A common user experience for touch and voice devices is also planned, while mouse-first devices will get a separate UX.

What's interesting is that Microsoft plans to make Threshold run on a wider array of devices, so the touch SKU will work on displays ranging in between 4 inches and 8 inches. These units can be produced by either Microsoft or a number of partners.

On the other hand, the mouse-based SKU will support displays from 10 inches to 30 inches, while the voice version will be offered on screens with sizes between 40 inches and 80 inches. This will be available exclusively on Microsoft devices, the source also notes.

At the same time, Microsoft is also working to merge the stores, which means that users will only have to purchase a specific app just once and then install it on phones, tablets, PCs and Xbox One consoles.

Of course, we should take all of these with a pinch of salt, as they're all rumors and, as usual, Microsoft does not want to comment on future projects.
