While it is in the process of forcing users of its IM client to upgrade to the latest version of the client-based application, Microsoft has introduced a new version of Windows Live Messenger. Designed in order to allow end users to “IM anywhere,” the new flavor of the IM client is exclusively web-based, and is currently available only via the Microsoft Singapore website for Web Messenger (via LiveSide). The project is currently in beta development stage, and there’s no telling whether the Redmond company will expand its availability worldwide, or if it is running a test of a localized version, or whether this is simply an independent project from Microsoft Singapore.

This despite the following note from the company: “Web Messenger is the official web-based IM client for connecting with your Windows Live Messenger contacts. (…) Windows Live Web Messenger lets you chat online with your friends and family using just a web browser! You don’t need to install any software to use it, so you can chat from any computer – at school, at work, in the library, or overseas,” Microsoft revealed.

The web-based version of Windows Live Messenger requires an Internet connection capable of speeds of at least 56 Kbps or faster, and Internet Explorer 6, 7 or 8, along with a Windows Live ID. Users who sign in will discover that they can perform the process automatically or manually each time they visit the home page of the Cloud IM client. Obviously, the Internet-based Windows Live Messenger is designed to allow even users without the IM client installed locally on their machines, to take advantage of the instant messaging application from Microsoft. However, don’t expect anything beyond basic functionality.

Microsoft also asks and answers two questions on the page for the Web Messenger: “How do I use Web Messenger on other computers? Simply log on to http://webim.sg.msn.com from any computer. In Microsoft Internet Explorer, you can add this site to your favorites by pressing CTRL+D. What is the difference between Web Messenger and Windows Live Messenger? Windows Live Web Messenger lets you use basic IM features on any computer with an internet connection, without needing to install any software. Windows Live Messenger is a full-featured instant messaging program that you can install on your computer.”

Is it "...using just a web browser!"
or "using just a Internet Explorer!"?

There is huge diference there.

Hey Phil...the service works on Firefox so I assume you just need a web browser.
