Microsoft will release new testing builds of its OSes

Microsoft confirmed at the Windows 10 event today that new testing builds of its modern operating systems for PCs and smartphones would be provided in the coming weeks as part of the Insider programs on both platforms.

A new Windows 10 Technical Preview build would ship next week, Terry Myerson said during his keynote, while the very first Windows 10 for phones preview would be delivered to devices enrolled in the Phone Insider program in February.

Myerson emphasized that both were work in progress at the moment, and while Windows 10 Technical Preview is likely to be very stable and reliable, not the same thing can be said about Windows 10 for phones.

Joe Belfiore demoed an early version of Windows 10 for phones during the event, but many of the features were unfinished, he said, so there are many things to be improved in the coming releases.

The next Windows 10 preview for desktops will bring Cortana on the PC as well as Continuum, a feature that allows users to switch from the desktop to the Modern UI without interrupting their work. Continuum was already demoed in September, but the next build will bring the very first public version with this feature available to users.

As far as the public releases are concerned, there are no such details available right now, but sources say that Windows 10 is likely to launch in the fall of 2015.
