A new wave of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RTM downloads was made available by Microsoft on Windows Server Update Services 3.0. According to Cecilia Cole, WSUS Program Manager, the gold bits of Vista SP1 will only be dropped through WSUS 3.0 RTM and WSUS 3.0 SP1 (this update was offered on March 25). Microsoft released Vista SP1 to manufacturing on February 4, 2008 and to the general public via Windows Update and as standalone packages on March 18. Well, the English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese versions of Vista SP1's standalone packages have gone live on the MU Catalog on March 25.

Cole outlined the procedure designed to permit WSUS 3.0 administrators to import the Vista SP1 standalone packages. "Make sure KB 938759 has been installed on the server. If it has not been installed, the subsequent steps to import of Vista SP1 will fail. Open the WSUS Administrator console, then expand the Update Services node, then the node for the WSUS Server. Right-click the Updates node and select "Import Updates" which will open the Microsoft Update Catalog web site in a new browser window. In the Microsoft Update Catalog site, search for "Vista SP1" and click Search," she said.

The Vista SP1 packages will be highlighted in the Microsoft Update Catalog results. All that WSUS 3.0 administrators have to do is send them to the download basket via the "Add" option. Two choices will be available "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 - Standalone (x86)" and/or "Windows Vista Service Pack 1 - Standalone (x64)". This will allow the importing of Vista SP1 Standalone packages.

"Once the packages are selected, click the 'View basket' option. Confirm the selections then click "Import" to import the selected packages and any prerequisites into the WSUS Server. Once complete, click "Close" to close the Import Progress window and close the Microsoft Update Catalog site in the browser. In the Windows Service Update Services administrator console, confirm the appropriate packages and prerequisites are available," Cole added.
