When it released Visual Studio 2010 to manufacturing and started offering the first RTM trial bits earlier this month, only the English flavor of Microsoft’s development platform was accessible to customers worldwide. But, as it is the case with all major Microsoft products, the company is now working to deliver additional localized versions of the product. As of April 27th, 2010, French, German and Japanese developers are able to download, install and run Visual Studio 2010 in their native language. The localized bits in the three new languages are available via either the Microsoft Download Center or MSDN.

“In Developer Division, we put a great deal of thought and effort into building products for developers around the world. For some languages, we do a complete translation of our products. We also work closely with the community to offer a much broader range of languages than we could do ourselves,” S. Somasegar, senior vice president, Developer Division, revealed. “I’m happy to say that Visual Studio 2010 will be available in more languages than ever before and these languages will be available to our customers around the world faster than ever before.”

The French, German and Japanese versions of Visual Studio 2010 RTM are just the first localized versions of the product, according to Somasegar. In the coming months, Microsoft plans to release the successor of Visual Studio 2010 in a number of additional languages, tailoring the platform to developers on a variety of markets worldwide.

“With over a million words in the user interface and about 20 million words of documentation, producing localized versions of Visual Studio and the .NET Framework represents a massive engineering, testing, and translation effort. This is just the first wave of localized releases; several more are following soon,” Somesagar revealed.

Spanish, Italian and Russian are next in line to get localized versions of VS2010. According to Somasegar, releases designed especially for users in Spain, Italy and Russia will go live in May 2010. Come June, three more releases of Visual Studio 2010 will be offered, localized in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean.
