Will Cooke, Ubuntu Desktop Manager at Canonical, had the pleasure of sharing his latest video with us, where he demos the greatness of the Ubuntu Convergence on an ordinary Intel-based tablet, which has the latest development version of the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system with the highly anticipated Unity 8 interface.

The video starts with a demo of Ubuntu Touch on the said tablet, where Will Cooke demos the operating system’s features at high speed. A Netflix web app that allows users to watch movies online is also demoed in the video. Then, the LibreOffice office suite is demoed, editing a spreadsheet with a Bluetooth mouse device connected to the tablet in windowed mode.

“All the Unity & Mir code will land in the trunk once the teams are happy with the quality. Some of it is already there. We're still not quite satisfied with Xmir, there is more work to do around the input stack, so please bear with us while we get the bugs ironed out and then we'll get the alpha version ready for you to try on your own devices,” said Will Cooke on Google+.

Ubuntu convergence will be showcased at MWC 2015

Apparently, switching between tablet and windowed mode is fairly easy with the upcoming version of Ubuntu Touch and Unity 8. Both touch and mouse control is implemented in the next major version of Canonical’s mobile operating system. Later in the video, Ubuntu Touch gets demoded on a Nexus 7 tablet and Nexus 4 smartphone, where you can do exactly the same tasks.

As expected, Canonical will be present at the forthcoming MWC (Mobile World Congress) event, which will take place between March 2-5 in Barcelona, Spain. Canonical’s booth will be located in exhibit Hall 8.1 at stand F41. There, you will be able to see the Ubuntu convergence in action!
