Though it won't be bringing out quad-core processors until late next year, VIA is still quite active in its chosen market segments, and its most recent product launch consists of the EPIA-M850, a mini-ITX motherboard meant to be used in embedded multimedia devices, among other things.

Recently, rumors arose saying that VIA is planning on releasing quad-core chips of its own in 2011, besides just dual-core units.

Still, there will be a gap between it and Intel/AMD, and VIA intends to make up for this, at elast in part, by implementing unique features, such as higher security.

Whether this rumor is true or not, these releases won't, however, happen until the later parts of next year.

As such, the company will be, in the meantime, going about its business as usual, having already released its latest product, the EPIA-M850.

Essentially, the EPIA-M850 is a mini-ITX motherboard equipped with a Nano E series chip whose clock speed is of 1.2 GHz.

This CPU can be paired with up to two memory modules (for up to 8GB DDR3-1066) and is complemented by the Chrome9 DX9 integrated graphics.

The motherboard also features a Pci Express x4 slot, 5.1 channel audio, Gigabit Ethernet, a pair fo SATA ports, four USB 2.0 ports and, for video, HDMI and D-Sub.

All in all, these components make the new board capable of hardware acceleration for VC1, H,264 and WMV9 HD video formats.

"The VIA EPIA-M850 will enable the creation of a wealth of next generation, HD-ready commercial devices," said Daniel Wu, Vice President, VIA Embedded Platform Division, VIA Technologies.

"The VIA VX900 MSP offers comprehensive support of today's multimedia technologies, bringing vivid HD content to life without incurring heavy power usage or resorting to dedicated decoding hardware," he added.

Should one be interested in more information, VIA has already set up the product page of the EPIA-M850 on the official website.
