The folks at fireCore are proud to announce the release of an updated version of Seas0nPass, the jailbreak utility targeting second-generation Apple TVs. Version 0.7.6 adds untethered jailbreak support for the latest firmware.

In addition to supporting the latest iOS for Apple TVs, Seas0nPass 0.7.6 also contains minor bug fixes, though fireCore leaves those out from the release notes.

The group simply indicates their Apple TV jailbreak is more reliable now. Also noteworthy is that this new version provides a complete, untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.2 on the Apple TV 2G.

“A tethered jailbreak requires the AppleTV to be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup,” fireCore explains. “An un-tethered jailbreak removes this restriction. Un-tethered jailbreaks are are a bit more complex and take more time to complete.”

Created exclusively for the AppleTV, Seas0nPass is the first specific jailbreak tool targeting the set-top box.

The utility lets users easily create custom AppleTV IPSW files that the device can be restored to in iTunes.

Similar in functionality to the PwnageTool application, Seas0nPass also includes a simple 'tethered boot' option which aids in using newer AppleTV firmwares when an 'un-tethered' jailbreak is not yet available.

As it is the case with all jailbreak tools, Seas0nPass is available for free, and is open source. The source code is available on Github.

Earlier this week, the infamous iPhone Dev Team announced that their own PwnageTool application supported Apple TV jailbreaks.

Employing the same exploit by i0n1c, PwnageTool 4.3.3.1 can also hack iPhones, iPod touch devices, and the iPad.

Second-generation iPads are currently not supported by any of the existing jailbreak tools, though support is on the way, according to the iPhone Dev Team.

Seas0nPass can be found here. Guides and other helpful documentation on the Apple TV 2G jailbreak is also available at the fireCore site.

Softpedia does not encourage jailbreaking.
