This is still early work, but it shows Canonical's intentions and what they plan to do with the desktop environment

The new application switcher for Unity 8 has been demoed at the latest Ubuntu Online Summit and it shows the rapid progress that the Ubuntu developers are making with the latest version of the famous desktop environment.

Some people were worried that Unity 8 will look too much like its mobile counterpart, but as you can clearly see that is not the case. As it stands right now, Ubuntu developers are still working to make Unity 8 look and feel pretty much like the current Unity 7, at least from a design point of view. It's difficult to say if all of the features in Unity 7 will make it into Unity 8, but you can already see the shape of a proper desktop.

Ubuntu developers have already shown that Unity 8 is already well under way of becoming a replacement for the current version that is used. It won't be ready anytime soon to replace Unity 7 as the default solution, but we can now see how some of the pieces are falling into place, like the application switcher.

Unity 8 will be similar, but different

One of the things that Ubuntu developers underlined during their UOS sessions was the fact that, even if Unity 8 will be pretty similar with Unity 7, not all of the current features will be available in the same form, or none at all.

In any case, you can see what the application switcher looks like right now. Please keep in mind that this is very early code and it will take a lot of refinement. If history has taught us anything, it’s that Ubuntu developers make numerous changes and that even this application switcher might be changed. What's more interesting about it the fact that it looks nothing like its mobile counterpart, which should make the desktop users very happy.
