The selection made for Ubuntu 14.10 has been completed

The new Ubuntu 14.10 community wallpapers have arrived and the final selection has been made. These are probably some of the best wallpapers ever published with an Ubuntu system, and you will know why as soon as you see them.

Every six months, the Ubuntu developers ask the community for help in choosing the wallpapers that eventually make it in the final version. Some years seem to be more fruitful than others, but the selection made for the 14.10 version, dubbed Utopic Unicorn, is one of the best.

There used to be a time when the Ubuntu wallpapers where a hot item, but things have somewhat calmed down. On the other hand, the quality of the images has increased tremendously from an artistic point of view.

The new Ubuntu wallpapers are awesome

A few weeks before the selection of wallpapers is completed, the developers make a short announcement to the community, inviting them to send their own suggestions. As you can imagine, it's preferably that only original artwork is sent, it needs to have a resolution of at least 2560 * 1600, it has to be simple, and it needs to be compatible with the Unity elements.

Most of the users usually respect these ground rules, for the most part, but there are some exceptions. For example, someone sent an image for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS that wasn't theirs. The developers really liked the image, so they searched and found the original author and asked for permission to integrate it in the latest release.

The current selection of images didn't have anything exciting like that, but most of the images are breathtaking. Sure enough, a couple of them are a little bit bland, but the majority should satisfy even the most picky of users.

The images that have been proposed but didn't make the cut are still available on flickr.com if you want to take a closer look. It's possible that you might find something there that you like more than the official selection. In any case, you should hurry, as it's unclear for how long they are going to stay there.

Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) is expected to arrive on October 23, but until then you can download the latest daily image of the operating system and give it a go. You can also download the zip archive with all the images that have been selected for the Unicorn integration.
