New “Tron: Legacy” trailer takes a closer look at the father-son relationship

A new trailer for Disney’s much-hyped “Tron: Legacy” has been released and, unlike previous sneak peeks at the film, this one emphasizes the father-son story, in what is being seen as a bid to show that it’s not all about the special effects.

The film is a remake of the 1982 original – and it’s not making even the slightest attempt at hiding it. Jeff Bridges’s face, for instance, has been digitally altered to look like he did in the first film, as E! Online also points out.

As noted above, unlike previous footage released to promote “Tron,” this new trailer takes a step farther towards revealing the plot and, more specifically, how Sam Flynn’s father “disappeared” more than 20 years ago.

As we learn from the trailer, he didn’t just walk away on his son: he’d made the discovery of his lifetime and learned on his own that some great inventions come with a high price.

In his case, seeing them taking a life of their own and turning against their creator – “The Grid: a place of infinite possibility.”

“While previous trailers have focused heavily on the film's stunning visuals (and on some [wicked] electronic music), this latest one, well, still focuses on the stunning visuals, but also has a heartfelt reunion theme to it,” E! says of the new trailer.

“Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) discovers that his father, Kevin (Jeff Bridges), didn’t actually abandon him 20 years ago. He’s just trapped in the crazy world of grids, light cars and dangerous discus games that he’d created – and watched grow bigger and more dangerous than he ever predicted,” the same e-zine notes.

“Since it’s totally normal for a parallel universe created in a fit of ego-maniacal grandiosity to go wrong and turn against you – check out the digitally youngified Jeff Bridges as the villainous Clu – father and son find themselves on a life-and-death mission to escape,” the same publication writes.

“But no worries, Quorra (Olivia Wilde) is there to help! It’s always good to have a local – an attractive one, to boot – on your side,” E! also says.

Those who managed to get tickets for the so-called Tron Night 2010, which took place on October 28 and featured no less than 20 full minutes from the film, will easily recognize some of that footage in the new trailer.

But there’s a bonus for them too: towards the end of the trailer, there’s more action than in any other footage seen thus far, including a better look at the vehicles and aircrafts they use in the Grid.

“Tron: Legacy” is out in 3D in theaters in the US on December 17. Check out the trailer below to see whether you’ll be there on its opening night. Enjoy.
