Co-created with Doug Dorst, “S.” is best described as a transmedia experience

A couple of weeks ago, J.J. Abrams and his production house Bad Robot got movie buffs in a state of total confusion with the teaser trailer “Stranger.” The full trailer finally offers the answers you must have been looking for.

“Stranger,” true to its name, didn’t reveal what exactly it was meant to promote, but many inclined to believe it was for a new novel Abrams had co-written, envisioned as a transmedia experience.

Hence, the need for a trailer.

In the end, it proves that this theory was accurate: Abrams and Doug Dorst have written a novel called “S.,” which will be out in stores this October.

EW describes it as “about the relationship between a grad student named Eric and a college senior named Jennifer. They trade notes in the margins of a (fictional) 1949 novel by a mysterious author named V.M. Straka.”

“S.” is a novel within a novel, but will also include a map, newspaper clippings and, hopefully, video footage.

I haven’t been this intrigued since I first heard of Mark Z. Danielewski’s “House of Leaves,” perhaps one of my favorite reads of all times.
