HBO has both the money and the guts (and the talent) to pull off some of the most daring projects you’ll ever see on television and, week by week, it’s consolidating its position as leader in scripted programming. “The Leftovers” promises to be yet another hit show.

A new trailer was released the other day and, despite the fact that it includes new footage, it actually manages to be more confusing and intriguing. You can find it in full and in HD below, embedded at the end of this post.

The story is that of the disappearance of 2 percent of the globe’s population (about 140 million people) in a rapture-type event. Those left behind are forced to make sense of what has happened, while also dealing with more problems.

The series is based on the 2011 bestseller by Tom Perrotta, off a script by Damon Lindelhof, who also penned “Lost,” yet another major hit series, and “Prometheus,” the “Alien” prequel. It is directed by Peter Berg of the “Friday Night Lights” fame and stars Justin Theroux as a police officer whose wife and kid have also gone missing.

Liv Tyler, Margaret Qualley, Amy Brenneman, Emily Meade, Christopher Eccleston, Ann Dowd and Michael Gaston also star.

This new trailer is set to a super creepy and beautiful cover of “The Sound of Silence” and is packed with drama and tension, but also with action scenes towards the end. Whatever has happened to these people, it has turned them very violent towards each other.

“The Leftovers” premieres on June 29.
