The signs are pointing to a new Total War title, created by The Creative Assembly and published by SEGA, to be unveiled in all its splendor at the E3 trade show, which takes place towards the middle of June.

A mail received by major gaming news outlets apparently offers some details under embargo at the moment, the major piece of information, which can be shared with the wider public being that the game will not be advancing in the musket and cannon era the previous two Total War titles explored, instead opting for a return to the roots of the strategy series.

A message on the official Twitter account for The Creative Assembly was posted just after the leak occurred, saying, “Just to confirm, we are still working on Total War and aren't planning to get sporty!”

We already know that the Australian studio of The Creative Assembly, which provided work on Medieval II: Total War and created Stormrise, has begun to create a sports-oriented title of a more casual nature, linked with the London 2012 Olympic Games. But the main studio of the developer, which put together both Empire and Napoleon: Total War, was said to only be preoccupied with delivering more content for the most recent videogame.

A return to the roots might mean The Creative Assembly is getting ready to go back to the first title in the series, Shogun, and its Risk style strategic map, which some fans claim offers more options to the player, while making the Artificial Intelligence opponent more capable. A return could also mean taking the gorgeous Empire engine and applying it to the Ancient Era, with a focus on either the Greek world or on the rise of Rome itself. We'll know more about what's happening in less than one month.
