SSHD is a term that means solid state hybrid drive, a type of storage device that combines magnetic platter storage from hard drives with NAND Flash storage from solid state drives.

Toshiba has just revealed such storage devices, the 1 TB "MQ02ABD100H" SSHD measuring 9.5 mm in thickness, and the 500 GB "MQ02ABF050H" SSHD with 7 mm thickness.

Most of the storage space is HDD platter-based, with NAND chips mostly playing the part of buffer, plus holding area for the most frequently used files, like the operating system.

The NAND flash chips are Toshiba's own 19 nm, while the bulk of the storage space is owed to two platters (1 TB) or one (500 GB).

Both drives have error correction code (ECC), as well as conversion of logical block address and wear-leveling.

An all-in-one NAND SoC drives the devices, a merger between the normal NAND controller and the HDD controller. More precisely, the NAND control function is integrated into the main HDD chip.

All in all, the newcomers are good examples of 2.5-inch hybrid drives you can easily expect to find in future laptops, instead of expensive SSD+HDD combos. Sadly, availability and pricing details are unavailable.
