Enterbrain, a company which compiles sales data for the Japanese video game market, has announced that on December 26 of this year New Super Mario Bros. from Nintendo has become the first video game which has sold more than 6 million units on the DS family of hardware.

The exact figure stands at 6,015,255 units sold to gamers and it seems that the Mario powered remake is still selling pretty well and might reach the seven million mark during 2011.

New Super Mario Bros. was initially launched in Japan on May 25 in 2006, meaning that it took the game four years and a little over seven months to get to the six million copies sold mark.

New Super Mario Bros. has also been launched on the Wii home gaming platform for Nintendo, but it has performed worse there, managing to only go past the four million dollar mark in sales.

The gameplay in New Super Mario Bros. should be instantly familiar for all the fans of the character, allowing them to go through levels while jumping over obstacles, stumping on enemies and collecting coins.

Moves like ground thump, the wall jump and the triple jump are available and all the objects in the game are rendered in 2.5 dimensions in order to simulate the effect that gamers could also get on home consoles.

The game offers eight full worlds with 80 areas to run through, although some are only accessible if the gamer is able to complete some in game challenges.

The game has six power ups that can be applied to Mario, with the Mega Mushroom being the most interesting of the additions.

It's unlikely that any other title will soon go past New Super Mario Bros. in terms of sales, given the recent dip in sales seen by the DS line and the impending launch of the 3DS platform in early 2011.
