New Super Mario Bros. is a classic side scrolling platformer developed and published by Nintendo for its own DS handheld gaming console. It was released in North America and Japan in May 2006, with Australia and Europe getting it in June the same year and, last but not least, Korea in March 2007. It was the first original side scrolling platformer to star Mario ever since Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, which was released in 1992. It was also the first title to be a part of the main Mario series of games since the 2002 Super Mario Sunshine.
The story of New Super Mario Bros. is similar to almost all those found in the other famous side scrollers in the Mario universe. The action of the game follows the very popular Mario character as he fights his way through all of the henchmen commanded by Bowser to rescue the classic damsel-in-distress, Princess Peach. The Italian plumber has access to several power-ups, which are found in bricks he smashes with his fists, that help him complete his heroic quest, including the Super Mushroom, the Fire Flower and the Starman, each of them having unique abilities. In each of the eight worlds found in the game, Mario must defeat Bowser Jr. and Bowser before finally being able to save the Princess.
Reviews of the game were very good, achieving an aggregated score of 89 percent from Metacritic. Critics praised the improvements made to the Mario franchise, with the new features, but criticized the fact that the game was too simple. New Super Mario Bros. received quite a lot of awards and Editor's Choice prizes from the likes of Game Informer, Electronic Gaming Monthly or IGN. In Japan, it even broke the record for the best selling debut for a Nintendo DS game. This success carried over in North America, where, in just a month, it shifted half a million copies.
HINTS
House-ploitation
First, each time you get to a boss stage, return to world 1. Play the first stage once through, getting all the power ups but the giant mushroom (you are forced to only be Super Mario at the end of the level if you get it, without the fireballs). Instead, beat it and jump on the flag pole when the last two digits of the clock are 66, 55, or 44. This way, a toad house with extra lives will appear. Repeat this until you have many, many lives to spare.
To cheese the bosses, play through one more time (without getting the big mushroom) and end when the last two digits of the clock say 99, 88, or 77. This will make a toad house with the giant mushroom powerup appear. It will replace whatever else you already have. Finally, go to the stage with your newly equipped giant mushroom, fireballs, and lives. Play through it, but don't use your giant mushroom yet.
When you get to whatever boss you are playing, immediately activate the giant mushroom. Now, you can defeat the boss just by touching him! I don't know whether the big mushroom will kill all bosses, but for most of them, this works.
