Nintendo wasted no time boasting its new additions to the Mario game list at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo. Along with the Super Mario Galaxy 2 that is set to be released in 2010, the publisher also announced the New Super Mario Bros for the Wii. Nintendo’s vice president of sales and marketing, Cammie Dunaway, said that the game would take the Mario idea to "the fourth dimension" and that it would become available before the holidays.
The company kept that promise and gave the Wii installment of the Mario game a release date of November 15. The date concerns the North American launch and is fixed in Wii's schedule after the $50 price cut on the console and three weeks before the launch of
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the DS. The DS part of the famous franchise will be shipped out of Nintendo's door on December 7. Another big upcoming release for Nintendo is the Wii Fit Plus, which will be launched on October 4.
The new Super Mario Bros Wii will focus on a co-op gameplay for up to four players. The available characters are
Mario, Luigi, Blue and Yellow Toad. At the demonstration, the company showcased the gameplay modifications, like the ability to pick up other player in order to navigate the environment. Players will also compete against each other in an attempt to rank a coin collection highscore.
The gameplay idea is interesting but will also create mixed feelings between players. The game's purpose is to collect as many coins and outscore the rival players. But the environment, along with the new game feature, will require players to stop chasing each other’s tails, stop and control their coin-gathering frenzy and lend a helping hand to the enemy. With player cooperation necessary to advance through the level, the game will create a very interesting experience, as some might even choose to sacrifice themselves in order to sabotage the other players. In a way it kinda reminds of Kane and Lynch and it will be very interesting to see the finished game.
