Video game developer and publisher Nintendo has announced that New Super Mario Bros 2 for the Nintendo 3DS handheld is being prepared for an August launch on the Japanese market.

The company plans to also release the game at roughly the same time in the United States and Europe will probably get it at the same time, although no official dates have been offered.

Nintendo EAD is handling development duties on New Super Mario Bros 2 and it seems that the core gameplay elements will be the same as those seen in the first New Super Mario Bros, launched in 206.

The main element players will need to master is quite side scrolling platforming, using either Mario or Luigi as character, and Nintendo will probably try to offer a twist on the familiar formula via new moves, new power-ups and some changed enemies.

Nintendo has promised that it will continue to offer high profile titles for the 3DS in order to make sure that the handheld maintains its popularity with gamers.
