Even if you’re not a diehard Trekkie but just a lover of good movies, you must know that “Star Trek Into Darkness,” the sequel to the 2009 film, is the most anticipated release of next year. Empire Magazine has released a set of new photos from it.

As a special treat for fans, the mag went on the set of the latest J.J. Abrams film and came back with awesome pics of the characters they already know and love (Kirk, Spock and Uhura among them), but also of the mysterious villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

In fact, he even gets one of the two collector’s edition covers.

Check them all out in the gallery below.

Speculation is wild that Cumberbatch plays Khan in the film, but the studio’s official line for the time being is that he is some “John Harrison” dude with an agenda against Captain Kirk and his beloved Enterprise.

Since Abrams is notoriously guarded when it comes to revealing too much about his projects, chances are we will only know for certain when the film comes out, in May 2013.
