Old game in new form

Namco Bandai has announced that its old and clunky horror action title Splatterhouse is due for a remake. Apparently, after the old TurboGrafx-16 version of the game came out on Nintendo's Virtual Console, a lot of gamers have been asking the company to take and make it play worthy again on next generation consoles.

The plot is based on the story of one college student whose girlfriend is kidnapped. As he searches for her, he stumbles upon an ancient, enchanted mask that, in true horror style, offers him great power at the expense of the corruption of his soul. He is better equipped to find his girlfriend, but must deal with the fact that he is "a juggernaut of pure violence and destruction", as the developers put it.

The game won't just focus on the fighting, although combat will be a significant element. Namco Bandai emphasizes the fact that combat will be very dynamic and open ended, with a variety of ways to deal with the enemy. One could opt to make weapons out of objects lying around in the vicinity or even use limbs torn from enemies as weapons against their former users. Apparently, some of the demon enemies found in the game can be brought to demonic life to help the player, mostly in solving some of the in-game puzzles.

The game will make gore a central part of the experience. As the people from Namco Bandai say monsters "will begin to dismember him, savagely tearing away limbs and ripping at his flesh to expose his internal organs. To survive, Rick must call upon the power of the Terror Mask to regenerate his mutilated body, allowing players to watch in gory detail as bones, veins, muscles, and skin return to his body in real time".

The game is set for an early 2009 release for the Xbox 360 gaming console and for Sony's PlayStation 3.
