A new version of the Windows-only Sn0wbreeze is available for download. The tool can be employed to jailbreak and unlock an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad using a Windows PC. It allows jailbreakers to preserve their baseband for future unlocks, as well as to use custom IPSW files.

According to OS X Daily, Sn0wbreeze 2.1 can jailbreak anything from iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G, to iPad, iPod touch 4G, 3G, 2G, as well as the new Apple TV.

The tool works with iOS 4.1 for iPhone and iPod touch, and iOS 3.2.2 for iPad. iOS 4.2 support is not confirmed, although similar jailbreak utilities have been labeled as compatible already.

Those wondering why Sn0wbreeze makes a difference should note that the tool is capable of spitting out a custom (jailbroken) IPSW much like PwnageTool, the Mac-only jailbreak utility developed by the iPhone Dev Team.

With a custom IPSW at hand, iDevice owners can selectively restore their device in iTunes choosing the hacked file to install. This is basically how a jailbreak is achieved, although it is not highly recommended to do so.

Apple does a good job at explaining why, although it is worth noting that jailbreaking has been deemed legal in the U.S.

Softpedia doesn't encourage jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV, or any other device.

This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device.

Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience employing the respective device.

If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
