New Skyrim Patch Coming Next Week, Bethesda Promises More Updates

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be getting a fresh ‘incremental’ patch next week, as Bethesda has finally cleared a few things up, just as update 1.2 broke the game for quite a lot of players across the PC, PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 platforms.

Skyrim captured the hearts and minds of millions of gamers since its release last month and, even with its myriad of bugs or glitches, it still became endearing for many.

Bethesda released a major update, patch 1.2, this week but, sadly, instead of fixing some more serious issues, only ended up creating other problems. Some were hilarious, like the backwards flying dragons, while others were more serious, including random crashes on the PC.

The studio has now made an official statement about these issues and promised that a new update is coming to fix what patch 1.2 already broke.

“This week we released update 1.2 across all platforms, and we’ll be releasing an incremental update next week. We anticipate it will be up on PC first, and then hit PS3 and Xbox 360 later in the week. Among other things, the update will fix issues like magic resistance not calculating properly and the rare, amazing backwards flying dragon. Once the update is released, we’ll share the full release notes,” Bethesda said on its blog.

The studio also confirmed that a steady stream of updates will be coming to Skyrim, with more patches arriving on the PC via Steam, while bulkier title updates will be posted for consoles like the PS3 or Xbox 360.

“After the holidays, we’ll continue to release regular updates for the game — through full title updates, as well as incremental “gameplay updates” to fix whatever issues come up along with rebalancing portions of the game for difficulty or exploits. We plan on having a lot of these, not just a few. Overall, you should expect updates to be hitting the PC and Steam earlier and more often, as that’s a process we control. Console updates will follow, as they must be certified and processed by those manufacturers.”

Last but not least, the studio highlights that it’s still a huge game but it’s going to take more care with its updates, trying to fix underlying issues instead of minor problems that could cause serious, overarching glitches.

“We’ve also realized that with the millions upon millions of people playing Skyrim, we need to treat our updates with greater care. If we get too aggressive trying to fix a minor issue, we run a risk of breaking something larger in a game like this. To be safe, we are prioritizing code side fixes right now over data fixes. Quest and balance issues are usually data, and those will start rolling in a large way with the January updates.”

Are you satisfied with Bethesda’s answer to Skyrim’s problems or do you think the studio could have tried a bit more with the recent patch 1.2?

i love the game its great and i play it everyday but if i pay $60/70 bucks for a game it should not have a glitch so big that i cant play the main quest.Im talking about the jagged crown quest...it was just getting good and now i feel a bit ripped off.

Comment #1.1 by: Jkr on 03 Dec 2011, 04:27 GMT

Oh, Really? Why don't you create a game as amazing as this and not have a few drawbacks?

Comment #1.2 by: Truthhurts on 03 Dec 2011, 20:02 GMT

obviusly its not THAT amazing since it has so many glitches.... i feel the same way since i got to the point where i have to talk to ulfric to get him to come to the greybeards peace treaty and it won't let me talk to him...

Comment #1.3 by: vincelli2 on 04 Dec 2011, 04:15 GMT

yeah seriously. i hate how people always b**** about a game and dont appreciate the work that they put into this. so you cant do the main quest, there are several side quests you can do and will end up doing after you beat the main quest anyways, unless you like to waste your money.

Comment #1.4 by: Zandaric on 04 Dec 2011, 09:35 GMT

OMG, Jkr so you think it is ok to release a game when you can not finish the main quest or goal? What the hell are you smoking? Yeh, the game is very nice but people should be able to finish the main point of the game once it is released. Yes, I can see a lot of work has been put into it. But to me, with my avatar's face disapearing when I put on an item. Well, it feels more like I'm beta testing it. We should not have to pay money to beta test a game!!! Get on the ball and actually fix these major issues instead of breaking more of the game. This is not beta anymore!!!

Comment #1.5 by: D0Sb00t on 04 Dec 2011, 15:39 GMT

Don't worry about the haters. I agree with you (as do most adult gamers) - the developers at Bethesda are professionals. While the storytellers and creative people do a wonderful job of imagining incredible worlds, the technical aspects tend to get overlooked. To use a car analogy, people would be upset if they bought a beautiful car only to find that the engine stops every 12 miles, and that you have to refuel it to get it to start again, even if there is gas in the tank. Beautiful design, less than top-tier professional execution. I'm 38, so I don't tend towards rhetoric.

Comment #1.6 by: darkside on 05 Dec 2011, 10:31 GMT

see I didn't have any problems at all with the jagged crown quest and I'm betting bethesda didn't either when they tested it, the only people who complain about bugs and don't have the patience to point them out and wait for fixes are people who've never written a line of code and don't understand what kind of effort goes into making even the most simple of games.
and no the jagged crown quest is not part of the main quest line.

Comment #1.7 by: IWriteLotsOfCode on 05 Dec 2011, 18:15 GMT

People have every right to complain when software doesn't work as intended. It's the developer's job to make it work right the first time, and to patch it correctly when it doesn't. It really doesn't matter how complicated it is - if it's more complicated, then the quality control needs to be better.

You wouldn't make the same argument for your car or house, or for a power plant, or for computer hardware, would you? Why is it ok for software to be sold with major bugs?

Comment #1.8 by: Argle Bargle on 05 Dec 2011, 18:52 GMT

Such problems might be understandable, given the scope of the game, if every single Bethesda game wasn't broken like this. They always release really buggy games. And they are not usually very responsive about fixing them, depending on the mods community far too much.

I will give them this: This is the fastest I can recall them whipping out such patches. Even if it is in response to their earlier patches mucking the game up.

Comment #1.9 by: Skyrimiscrack on 06 Dec 2011, 16:46 GMT

That's funny.. I've been playing Skyrim for 100+ hours now and not much of the bugs hinder my enjoyment of it. I'm more annoyed at the psycho aggressive horse and mentally challenged companions (Lydia). The game is beautiful, massive and amazing.. give these developers a break. You're ignorant to think that a game of this scale would be bug free on release.. truly ignorant. A game like this will take time to mature and bugs are a known factor in any development process. Hell, Battlefield 3 is no where in this scale of Skyrim and yet it still has bugs. Deal with it.. just be happy that in Skyrim, you have plenty to occupy you until quest bugs etc gets fixed. And Jason's Nemesis, you may be a software developer, but it's obvious that you've never developed anything close to Skyrim.

Comment #1.12 by: Xcoder on 11 Dec 2011, 09:53 GMT

I beat skyrim's alduin quest and stormcloak quest yesterday. I say the bugs I encountered were all minor ones... I did't update my game to 1.2 so I played through game in version 1.1. Right now I updated to 1.3 and so far I don't have any major bugs encountered... By the way I'm playing skyrim on the PC... Hey Bethesda! I'm waiting for the DLC's and expansion already!!!

Comment #1.13 by: Hardcore gamer on 29 Dec 2011, 20:12 GMT

The only people you have to blame is your self people
Think of it this way would you rather wait another year
While Bethesda plays the game and fixes every thing ?
Most people would agree they could handle some glitches
To be able to play the game I understand the frustration in
Glitches as I have had so Many I can't count them from graphics
To quest lines to simple object orientation but understand it takes
Time to fix these issues. And the issue with the patch doing more harm
Than good is our fault for pressuring them to realese patches to us without
Them being fully tested. As was the game... If you have so Many issues with it
And it's obvious it's hindering your life from moving forward take it back and forget
About it as for me I'm happy to play the game as is and wait for the fixes...

Comment #1.14 by: steppan on 13 Jan 2012, 12:28 GMT

The companies that makes these games just cannot win... this is a huge game and obviously it is going to have some issues with it, the only way they could have released it without all the bugs would have been to not have all the new features in it and just release it as Oblivion but with a few things extra to it.
At the end of the day it's either as it is, OR they have to keep pushing back the release date until all these issues are fixed, and then I bet you would complain about that too.
It is impossible to find a AAA title out there without any bugs (especially one as big and in-depth as Skyrim).
I haven't played the game myself but have read up lots on it, and I can understand your frustration at not being able to finish the main quest but at the end of the day it was known from the very begining that there was issues with this game and so you took the risk and that is for you to deal with it.... I am sure over time they will be releasing patches to fix all of the things, so you just have to remain patient, play the other part of the game and just post in forums WHAT your issues are without b*tching so that they know what they need to fix. It's not like they are sat there laughing at you, I bet they are in every single hour of everyday working on fixing these problems so give them a break

Comment #1.15 by: Doctor Deebs on 26 Jan 2013, 05:48 GMT

Honestly, I agree with Jkr and vincelli2. I've used the Skyrim tool kit to create certain properties in the game such as quests, weapons, npcs, etc. I have to say that it is a very tedious process and it is amazing how well they put things together. Sure Bethesda is known for having a lot of bugs or glitches in their games but give me another developer who makes a free roam game (I mean true free roam) that doesn't have bugs and is still amazing. You'll find no one compared to Bethesda. People should just shut their mouths and sit down to enjoy the gift that is video games. It's the people who develop and test these games for your entertainment who are constantly yelled at and ordered around. Just sit and wait. What happened to patience?

Comment #2 by: taz on 02 Dec 2011, 15:14 UTC reply to this comment

Why wasn't it tested more thoroughly prior to release. Did they even test this at all ? It is just not good enough using the public as a beta tester when they received 470 million dollars plus in the first week of sale for this rubbish game. The release should have been delayed until the game was fully playable.

Comment #2.1 by: Dwayne on 02 Dec 2011, 18:40 GMT

This is exactly what i was going to say.

Comment #2.2 by: CJ on 03 Dec 2011, 12:34 GMT

I think saying the game is "rubbish" is a bit of an over-reaction. Bethesda devolped their own engine and basically built the entire game from scratch. While it's unfortunate that there are so many bugs (almost impossible to avoid in a game of this magnitude), you should be thankful that they are going to the effort to fix them rather than saying "we have our money, fix it yourself".

Comment #2.3 by: Jason on 04 Dec 2011, 02:58 GMT

If you could only comprehend the amount of data and the lines of code in this game you would sure not be so ignorant in your statement. In a game as massive as this one with as many interactive parts, pieces, and NPC's there is NO comprehensible way to have this game be 100% completed without another 5 years of beta testing. There are billions of combinations of everything in this game and that fact that Bethesda has only a handful of major bugs and then some minors ones is nothing less than amazing. You couple this with a relatively quick turnaround for bug fixes is great. I come from a software development background and I still couldn't fathom how difficult it must be to develop a game like this.

Comment #2.4 by: Jason's Nemesis on 04 Dec 2011, 15:42 GMT

@Jason - I am a software developer. It is possible to unit-test code to ensure that it works. This WAS a relative rush job. Things like the 2GB memory limit cause crashes constantly on my machine. I have dual video cards, and still hit stuttering framerates at times, even inside of buildings. That my friend is sloppy testing at its worst. Until YOU get a job as a software developer, don't assume anything. Just because the game is big doesn't mean it can't be made to work correctly. If you ARE a developer, I really don't ever want to use programs you've had a hand in.

Comment #2.5 by: WTFYOUGUYS on 06 Dec 2011, 01:41 GMT

Quit comparing video game bugs to non-functioning cars or houses. A video game costs $60, can be fixed with patches, and are rushed to market in order to meet deadlines made business men who don't have a terribly good grasp of how much programming and testing is required in order to get a game of this magnitude right. Cars and houses cost tens of thousands of dollars, can not be fixed by downloading patches, and do not get get sold until construction is finished no matter what sort of deadlines have been set.

Comment #2.6 by: ne02001 on 08 Dec 2011, 09:46 GMT

I love this game but it's so BROKEN. PLEASE FIX WINDHELM HOUSE PROBLEM AND BLOOD ON ICE QUEST. NO- NPC WILL TALK TO ME ABOUT IT. THIS GAME IS BRILLIANT BUT SO FLAWED. PLEASE BETHESDA. GAME LAGS AND GRPRHICS PROBLEMS CAN WAIT. MAKE THE GAME PLAY AS INTENDED AS THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING.

Comment #2.7 by: Ace on 20 Dec 2011, 12:52 GMT

Wow. it's asking for an opinion about the game's bug fixes. someone states their opinion. everyone jumps on said person like jackals. He never said they didn't put in hard work or effort. what i got out of what he said was along the lines of, "great game, but fixes can (and should) be made." honestly, people who * and whine about other people bitching, is not only childish and immature, but quite ironic really. I think that those who understood and replied back IN A CIVIL matter, are those to be listened to. If you can't use intelligent statements to express an opinion, then you shouldn't even try to post it. It's not helping anyone, or really having an effect except to make the person give off the impression of being an * . As far as the bug fixes, I have to agree that they should release a patch relatively soon, as it does inhibit the story line. Before anyone starts jumping on me about "not realizing how hard is to code and develop a game" just know that i honestly do know how difficult it is, and i know they do a * good job. as with everything else, though. there is always room for improvement no matter what it is. I can barely make a 2d game using C#, that's how i know it takes much skill and effort to learn and implement. I'm not saying they don't work hard. I'm saying there could be improvement (e.g. a patch)

I'am very satisfied with what Bethesda's had to say but believe they should have this problem fixed with in the next few days not a week. I cant even play skyrim on the 360 because it will 1 of 2 things freeze in the middle of game play or when in the loading screen go black and freeze again.

I use the Xbox controller to play on the PC and now, with this update, I have to turn of the controller if I want to do something as simple as save, or have a conversation. I love Skyrim and Bethesda, but more effort should have been made to catch these sorts of things. Did no one over there play test their own update?

Patch 1.2 was nothing more that a DRM patch. It did nothing else. I saw NO change from before vs after, except the executable tied to Steam updates. At least I had a backup of the original executable to go to when it refused to play for me after the patch. I'm still using it. I'll go back to steam crap when the big patch comes out, but only AFTER I see feedback on it. Sorry, but I paid for this game, and I expect it to work.

I understand this is a HUGE game and it will take some time for the wrinkles to be ironed out and that major parts of the game can't be cleared up over night, but from understanding of the 1.2 patch it was to fix some texture issues and a few glitches with surroundings no offence but I'd rather be able to play my game rather than worrying about how pretty it looks. (Am refuring to the glitch for the main quest and companions quests)

Ok so I am not the only one who's game freeze during the Companions quest where Farkis turns into a Werewolf for the first time in the game and when he frees me from the cage thing, and when I try to retieve that horn for the main quest line but it is taken and I have to go to the Sleeping Giant Inn, and when I rent the room and go in, it freezes right when the lady comes in to say, "So you're the Dragonborn eveyone has been talking about."

I have been playing the elder of scrolls since Oblivion and it is a great game but when this sort of * happens you wonder sometimes if the game company's give a * if the game is full of bugs or is still not ready to be realesed and im not just talking about Bethesda over the years the gaming community has grown the years have gone by and many great games have got in good scores and have built up a good reaputation but at the same time have their bad reaputation for ex, call of duty Hackers,Trolls,Campers but but Bethesda needed more time to get the bugs and gliches and any other BS under controll they should of taken more time to fix the biger bugs and should of tested this game more so dont have a problem that leads to biger problems and thats why you dont do this * that pisses people off even more next time they should put time and care into pach so it can fix the problems and not cases a * LOAD of more problems.

Hey vincelli2 you honestly need to think before you talk as a matter of fact casuals like you dont have the right to talk you probably only have 10 quests completed on skyrim. Any real gamer knows the #1 reason to play a game is for the story. Hey guess what if you cant play the story why bother playing yes there are other quest you can still fight dragons but i would find it pretty annoying that i find a tomb that i cant access because its related to the main quest or something this isnt just a problem with the main quest its a problem with all quest lines and multiple side and misc. Quests just because you suck at games and dont play them much doesnt mean you have the right to complain about those who want to play quests but cant so seriously quit being a little * troll and shut the f**k up

Comment #21.1 by: Lone_Wolf on 06 Dec 2011, 00:44 GMT

Hey, stop being a * . Everyone plays a game for different reasons. A #1 gamer encountering problems on the main quest would know to go to Bethesda's blog, post stating there problem and do some other quests while Bethesda do a patch. And I've done 20+ quests before level 24 and haven't done act 1 of the Main Quest, does that mean I can't play a game? By your logic I guess I should probably sell every game and console I own and sit around on my a** doing nothing.

To anybody having issues with frequent crashes, learn to use the internet, it's not due to bethesda, but rather a steam created patch that prevents you from being able to use more than 2gb of ram while playing the game, use the 4gb skyrim launcher and all should be fixed.

since the patch my PS3 Froze twice both times after using the "Wait" in a public area like the market in Riften and in front of my Breezehome in Whiterun. I think it froze because it seemed to have a hard time loading the new locations of the NPCs (no worries though I save often so nothing serious lost). Also noticed a huge lag in a couple of areas, particularly when there is 2 dragons in close proximity that is where I've seen the dragon that flys backwards and at a some point it just stays in the same spot for a while before suddenly jumping to a completely different location :P All in All great game, I'm very pleased with it and look forward to all the bugs getting Ironed out :) Btw anyone else have any trouble picking up items or searching killed targets? I've had to pass up some Items because I couldn't search a killed npc or pick up potions/ore because the target wouldn't register; In addition, I had to reload because I couldn't search and get one of the three amulet fragments because I couldn't search the corpse. Just a heads up in case someone else ran into the same problem. Save Often :D

Comment #36.1 by: john on 17 Jan 2012, 21:06 GMT

did the patch fix this glitch?

Comment #37 by: JS on 06 Dec 2011, 14:38 UTC reply to this comment

As far as I'm concerned the elemental resistance bug is enough reason not to get this patch. I'll wait till the next one, thanks. Classic Bethesda.

They've got the right idea, they know what customers want to hear, now if they could just execute.

Comment #39 by: Hushkababa on 07 Dec 2011, 07:24 UTC reply to this comment

I absolutely love bethesda games but this is pretty bad. I feel like they could have hired 100 people to test the game for two weeks and would have found a few of these problems. Nothing too gamebreaking on my end, but it was pretty fun trying to fight an invisible dragon.

Comment #40 by: Nt40 on 07 Dec 2011, 13:03 UTC reply to this comment

They need to patch the game play. I'm stuck along the main story line at Windhelm, needing to speak to Ulfric and make the treaty, but he says I should be doing "The Jagged Crown" quest and won't respond with dialogue. So I go to Galmar cos that's where the arrow tells me to go, but he keeps saying something like "I still can't believe you convinced....." with no dialogue... This sucks...

Is this gonna solve the markath go to jail dialogue loop glitch?

Comment #43 by: sdasd;lkjasdf;lkj on 10 Dec 2011, 20:56 UTC reply to this comment

The game is mostly pretty badass but the quest glitches are ridiculous. I already can't finish the Companions story line and now I can't finish the "visit the college of winterhold" quest. I'm getting very peeved Bethesda.

I enjoyed running around Skyrim and completely obliterating enemies. I also have another character that I am playing through the game regularly. Why was the Oghma Infinium glitch patched? Both are equally fun to play as! If this game is advertised as a game that we (the customers) are capable of playing it the way we want to, why patch that glitch? I understand half of us want to play the game based on the storyline. But what about the other half of us that want to enjoy the game through other means? I'm not complaining; however, if you're against a glitch in general then simply don't use it. It's not like Skyrim is capable of playing online with other players, it's a single player game so you're not hurting anyone other than yourself. I say let everyone play the game how they want to play it. With or without glitches as far as leveling up is concerned. Bring the Oghma Infinium glitch back =P

Comment #47 by: QuickSave on 30 Dec 2011, 12:11 UTC reply to this comment

I'm 50 hours in and I'm having all kinds of problems. The game runs slowly now that the file size exceeds 8 Mb and all kinds of game breaking glitches have occurred especially in the main quest. How do you not beta test the Main Quest?! I've had problems like clockwork with fallout 3, new vegas, and now skyrim and for some reason I keep crawling back expecting something different. Bethesda receives far too much praise for its horrible execution and the idea of skyrim winning GOTY is painful to me.

Comment #48 by: alicemurray on 30 Dec 2011, 13:54 UTC reply to this comment

so far skyrim I can not play it is crashing all the time and get a black screen. i hit level 69 then that patch ruined all........going to trash this game if it is NOT fixed

How dare anyone say, "...create a game this as amazing as this and not have a few drawbacks". You're part of the problem. Bethesda is treating its PAYING CUSTOMERS, once again, like effing beta testers, and fanboys are protecting their reputation. Seriously, Todd Howard, if your lead programmer was more angry about people putting buckets on NPC's heads than the fact that 90% of players are left with like 40 -60 lbs. of unremovable quest items in their inventories after so many hours of play, you should fire him. And. AND. Maybe (please!) stop caving to absurd release deadlines. There is NO effing WAY programmers/developers didn't notice this horrendous amount of (pre-patch, I might add) bugs. There is a huge positive correlation between hype and let down. This is starting to feel like New Vegas all over again. I bet we'll have to BUY 4 DLC packs to enjoy the FULL skyrim experience when all is said and done.

I think they should make it so you can change your charactors name and appearance ect.

Comment #55 by: Cocomo on 13 Jan 2012, 18:03 UTC reply to this comment

Skyrim is easily the best game ever made. I would like to submit for Bethesda's update crew, fix the problem with Quest items not being able to be drop from your inventory after completing the Quest.

Can't read the text whilr things are loading. very hard to read text of the dialog boxes...doing a lot of guessing at what is written on the screen and I can't find a way to increase the size of the font.

If your not using a HDTV, with a HDMI cable then the words are quite small. I had a regular tv with av hookups. I got an HDTV for Christmas along with a HDMI cable, and the game looks so much different

Comment #57 by: GameAddict on 16 Jan 2012, 01:52 UTC reply to this comment

i beleive that the patch 1.2 helped a little in some cases but my game started to lag a bit more often, but in the future i hope that this wont happen as bad or at all. but i look forward to the future and what it holds for Skyrim.

Comment #58 by: Einie on 17 Jan 2012, 12:29 UTC reply to this comment

As long as they sort out being able to quick equip dual wielding weapons that are upgraded, I will be happy cos that glitch is really annoying, Haven't noticed the other stuff, lol backwards flying dragon?! xD1

I just want the cornered rat/chance arrangement glitch to be fixed so my game will actually load the cornered rat quest into my log book instead of just not showing up at all. That is the only problem I have had

Comment #60 by: Anonymous on 07 Feb 2012, 11:01 UTC reply to this comment

They should make Skyrim Multiplayer, Like have servers, where you can make one or join one, (One sever per person) and like rule kingdoms with your friends and that stuff

Comment #61 by: KMR on 10 Feb 2012, 11:19 UTC reply to this comment

The game is AWESOME, I have no bugs/ problems with mine and this patch probably just patched up some that I had and make the game so much smoother and enjoyable :)

Comment #62 by: hey337 on 25 Feb 2012, 12:29 UTC reply to this comment

Well, good and all, but the only thing is I've been waiting for a fix on the Xbox 360 for the many Proudspire manor bugs such as the flying decor wich I already lost a valuable treasure. But I know Bethesda has been working hard so I give them much credit to them for that and making one of the best games of all time. :D

I would really like for them to fix the bug with marrying erik the slayer on xbox 360. I wanna marry him so badly :( also could they maybe add something to make dog followers stay at your house when dismissed like human followers do?

The latest update causes my game to freeze when my head goes underwater preventing me from continuing thieves guild missions and preventing me from getting my last trophy for platinum so please come out with the update to fix that ASAP

Comment #67 by: dfc31980 on 03 Jul 2012, 20:04 UTC reply to this comment

i can't even play skyrim on my xbox because it freezes every 10 minutes. i've tried everything from re-instaling it, erasing all saved data, to re-installing the latest patch. so, NO, I'm not satisfied with the patch.
