Those who bought Serious Sam 3: BFE earlier this week are in for a nasty surprise as the game, ‘thanks’ to a new update, can’t recognize certain save game files, but its developer, Croteam, says a new patch will arrive soon to address this issue.

Croteam and Devolver Digital released Serious Sam 3: BFE earlier this week on the Steam digital distribution service and, at least from the launch trailer, it seemed to be a great title that brings the same classic shooter experience that made previous Serious Sam games so popular.

Sadly, after an update that appeared yesterday and was automatically downloaded by most new owners, a glitch appeared that made the game not recognize certain save files, meaning lots of players couldn’t continue their playthroughs.

A member of the Croteam studio has posted on the game’s Steam forums a statement about this issue, confirming that the team is already working on a solution.

"Oh, shoots! This was certainly not expected, but now that you say, I know what caused it," said the developer. "The update wasn't supposed to be that big. It broke saves on levels #1, #2, #9 and #12 because those were accidentally included in the update.”

"Will ship another one tomorrow, and we can revert this problem by restoring old versions of the levels. Unfortunately, if we do that, then the revert will break saves on those created today. “

The developer posted another reply shortly after that, saying that the studio might be able to make both the old and the new save games work.

The new patch that’s going to eliminate this issue will be released sometime today, although a concrete release date has yet to be revealed by the guys at Croteam.

Hopefully, this pretty serious issue will be fixed as soon as possible and its owners will be able to get back to shooting all sorts of monsters while playing as Sam.
